MENIDING DEVICE FOR CHAINS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD D. Wooos, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mending Devices for Chains of which I hereby declare the following to be afull, clear,"and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same; I V r The objects of theinvention are to provide a combined mending device for a chain, which serves also at theoption of the user an additional link, or as a terminal hook for-the chain and can be used in emergencies for either purpose.

It is also a compact and serviceable device audits use'will not lessen in any" way the strength of the chain. but may rather serve V to increase its tensile strength The invention comprises, -a pair of S- shaped links spaced apart upon a common central support, and havingtheir extremities so shaped that a chainlink can be inserted between them only on one side of the device and can only be withdrawn from the other side and are so shaped as to prevent accidental separation of the links under all Varieties of use of the chain.

The invention further includes the com bination and construction of the several parts hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings pointed out in the. claims. 7

In these views A and A are the two 8- shaped members, each preferably formed of sheet metal wider at the center and tapering toward each end.

These S-shaped members are centrally connected by means of the heavy rivet B.

In Fig. l dotted line entering the tapered extremity a of one end of the upper of the s-shaped members. This action requires firstbringing the loop to register w1th an opening a, then depressing it to clear it from the corresponding member A, then moving it about the curved end of the other member A and withdrawing it at a from the tapering end thereof. 7

This succession of movements required to remove a chain link from 'both'the S-shaped members provides perfect protectionfrom accidental separation of the parts.-

7 The device can be carried in the pocket to replace a broken link temporarily and thus prevent delay in the work or can be used continuously as a link in the chain, and since it is double and the pulling strain is received upon the edges of the members the new link may be stronger than the other links of the chain. 7

When the device is employed as a terminal hook, the chain link is passed over the point a to the center of the curve and remains there and is held from coming out by means of thickened sides a a of the part a, and a thickened portion a of the body of the other member.

This hook can easily be made as strong as the chain, and when made of properly toughened sheet steel is light and portable, and can be carried in the pocket.

Applicants S-shaped links are stationary and spaced apart, and the eye or chain link can be inserted in one way, first over the long extremity, then around to the short extremity, then transversely over the short extremity and back over both oi them.

Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patent is: V

l. A link member comprising two parallel relatively immovable S-shaped members spaced from each other, a central rigid connection preventing the rotation of one member uponthe other, one S-shaped member having shorter extremities than the other, said link member attachable to a second link oreye by first passing the loop of said eye over one of said longer extremities, next moving it around said longer extremity until it can be moved transversely of-the short extremity and back over both of the extremities, said link being detachable therefrom by means of a reversemovement,

A mending device for a chain, comprising a pair of relatively immovable parallel S-shaped members spaced apart, and acen tral member rigidly connecting said 8- shaped members together, the hooked extremities of one member being shorter than the hooked extremities of the other member, whereby openings are'provided between said shorter extremities, and the central shank of the same, through which a link can be withdrawn from said shorter member, and finally-over one of the extremities Copies of this patent may be obtained for of the other 8-shaped member and said link removable by means of the reverse operation.

member havinglong extremities over which a link of'said chain can be introduced, and the other having shorter extremities providing openings through which said link can be withdrawn, and a central .connecting means for said S-shapecl members, said longer extremities and the body therefor being thickened adjacent'to .the point of in-- sertion for said link.
