FASTENING DEVICE FOR CABLES.v
Application filed June 19, 1922. Serial No. 569,222.
vices for Cables, of which the following is'a specification, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings. v
This invention relates to locking devices and more particularly to locking devices for flexible members, such as cables.
An object of the invention is to provide a device ofthis character wherein the ends or' one end of a rope or cable may be positively locked and firmly held, regardless of the I strain applied to the cable or rope,
Another object of the invention is to provide a locking device: of this characterin eluding a clamp carried by one port-ionof a cable and stop means carried by another cable or opposite end of the cable to which the clamp'is connected, saidstop 'member, being adapted to engage the clamp to prevent slipping of the cable within the clamp. It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of this character including a clamp adapted to be carried by one end of the cable, the clamp having jaws and a clamping lever, said jaws being adaptedto receive the opposite end of the cable, the I jaws beingurged into 'engagementwith said opposite end of the cable by the clamping lever, and means carried by the opposite end of the cable for preventing longitudinal movement of saidopposite endof the cable. It is still a further object of the invention to provide a locking device of this character including a clamp, the jaws ofwhich are normally urged toward each other into clamping engagement with an object upon movement of the locking lever of the clamp to its closed position, said lever being; provided with means for securing the same tothe clamp in its lockedposition.
. lVith theseand other objects in view, the
inventionconsists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more, particularly described,v fully- :tastening device constructedQin accordance with an embodiment of the invention FigureQ is an end elevation partly closed; y Figure 8 is a section 3-3' of Figure '1; j s
Figure 4 is a plan view of the clamp in its open positionl f Referring to the, drawings, 5 designates a flexible member or cable which-"may be con- .struct'ed, ofany material. is of course obvious that portions of this device may be used o'n'a' single cable orfsepa'rate cables,ac-. cording" to the work. I illustration, however, the'device' is shown on a single cable. In connection with the cable,
of the'clamp taken thev line i For the purpose of i a clamping device is' used, said clampi 1 H vice comprising a body member, consisting of a sheet of resillent metal stamped to provide a body'member 6," having an extension 7 projecting front one side, there- 7 of. The side portions 8 and 9 of'th'el body member" serve as jaws, the jaw 8 havspaced extensions 10' projectingtherefrom, said. extensions being coiled to pro vide hinge knuckles, the knuckles projecting beyond the edge of the jaw 9. In'the forma} tion. oftheclamp of the lock, the body memher is bent at' its central portion to provide a socket memberi ll substantially corresponding in" diameter to the diameter of the cable or flexible member to bec'lamped' and adapted to receive one endlot thecable, The extension? has its marginal edges-separated from thejaws '8' and 9 so that said extension may be formed into a ferrule or sleeve adapt ed to receive the extremity of thecable 5. Brazing, soldering, .or any suitable means may be used to firmly secure theextremity of the cable withinthe ferruleor sleeve.
By this formation, the jaws 8 and, 9 are disposedinspaced parallel relation to each other and as the clamp is made of resilient metal, the. jaws are intended to .be normally sprung away from each other and also eat tend a considerable distance outwardlyof the secured end of thecable. .In order to urge the jaws toward each other-and to dis.-
pose the same in their clamped position, a
clamp lever 12 is provided, saidvlever' con sisting of a length of resilient material having one end portio 13 thereof reduced to provide an extension. The extension is coiled to form a hinge knuckle 14: adapted to be disposed between and register with the openings of the hinge knuckles formed by the extensions 10. The lever is then bent adjacent its end portion 13 substantially at right angles to said end portion, while the opposite end portion 15 is likewise bent in angular relation to the central portion of the lever, the last bent portion being curved according to the diameter of the socket 11. The extremity of the end portion 15 is provided with a bead 16 which not only forms the finger piece, but assists in locking the lever in a manner to be hereinafter described. The knuckle 14 is pivoted by means of a pintle 16 passing through the hinge knuckles of the jaw 8. The end portion 13, that is, that portion of the lever from the hinge knuckle 14 to the junction of the central portion with the end portion 13, is considerably less in length than the distance between the upper edges of the jaws 8 and 9 so that when the lever 12 is swung over the jaw 9, said jaw will be urged toward the jaw 8, because of the shortness of the end portion 13 as above described.
In view of the fact that the jaws are normally swung outwardly, when the end portion 15 of the locking member is engaged with the bottom of the socket member 11, the jaw 8 likewise will be urged toward the jaw 9 as the end portion 15 is inclined inwardly toward the central portion of the lever. This naturally causes both jaws to bind on the cable by urging both jaws simultaneously toward each other. This locking action is assisted by the bead 16 as it reinforces the end 15 and prevents the same from springing out wardly. Furthermore, when the lever is swung to its closed position, the end portions 15 will urge the end portions 18 into engagement with the upper edge of the jaw and through the cooperation of the contact of the end portion 13 with said jaw and the frictional engagement of the end portion 15 with the body member 6, accidental movement of the lever is prevented. To permit all possible strain to be applied to the cable clamped by the jaws 8 and 9, the opposite end .ofthe cable 6 is provided with stop members 17, said stop members being constructed in the form of rings which are clinched or otherwise secured to the cable in spaced relation to each other, the space between the stop members corresponding to the width of the jaws 8 and 9. Any number of these stops may be used, according to the variety of adjustment desired.
In operation of the device the end of the cable provided with the stops 1'? is placed between the jaws 8 and 9 so that one stop is disposed at each end of the jaw and adapted to engage said jaws. The lever 12 is then swung over tlre end of the cable to be secured and looked as above described. This firmly holds the end of the cable within the clamp. However, should abnormal strain be applied to the cable, the stop members will come in contact with the ends of the jaws and there by limit or prevent longitudinal movement of the cable and prevent breaking of the grip of the jaws on the opposite end of the cable.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel form of fastener capable of being used any place desired to connect two ends of a cable to each other, or wherein it is desired to connect two cables. It is especially recommended for use in connection with the side conecting members of automobile anti-skid devices, as it provides a lock which is compact and which can be readily operated and adjusted to suit the size of the wheel. All of these features are possessed by a device that is exceedingly simple in construction and positive in its locking action.
What is claimed is 1. In combination with a flexible member, a clamp carried by one end of said member, stop members carried by the opposite end of the flexible member in spaced relation to each other, said clamp being arranged to re ceive and clamp the second mentioned end portion of the cable, said stop members preventing movement of the second mentioned end portion of the cable from its clamped position within the jaws.
2. A fastening device comprising a clamp including a pair of resilient jaws, a lever carried by the end of one of said jaws and adapted to extend over the end of the opposite jaw for urging said jaws toward each other, a flexible member having stop rings, carried by its end ortion in spaced relation to each other, one of the portions of said end portion between said rings being adapted to engage the jaws of the clamp, the lever of said clamp being adapted to urge the jaws into binding engagement with said portion of the cable, the stop rings of said portion of the cable being arranged to engage the end portions of the clamp to prevent longitudinal movement of said cable in either direction.
In combination with a cable, stop rings carried by one end portion of said cable, said rings being spaced from each other longitudinally of said end portion. a clamping device consisting of a resilient sheet of material bent to provide a pair of jaws, said sheet having an extension, the extension being formed into a ferrule adapted to receive the opposite end of the cable, means for permanently screwing said opposite end of the cable within the ferrule, a substantially U-shaped clamping lever pivoted to one of said jaws and adapted to extend over the opposite jaw. said jaws being adapted to receive the portion of the first mentioned end of the cable disposed between said rings to prevent disengagement of the stop rings from the jaws and to clamp said jaws in engagement with the first mentioned end of the cable.
&. In combination With a flexible member, a clamp carried by one end of said member, stop members carried by the opposite end of the flexible member in spaced relation to each other, said clamp being arranged to recelve and clamp the second mentioned end portion of the cable, said stop members pre-- venting movei'nent or" the second mentioned end portion of the'cable in either direction from its clamped position between the jaws; e
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature. 7
