I UNITED STATES LOUIS G. DUNN, OF
DIXON, \VY OMING.
WIRE-TIGHTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 11, 1906.
Application filed April 24, 1906. Serial No. 313,467.
T 0 all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS G. DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dixon, in the county of Carbon and State of Wyoming, have invented new and useful Improvements in WVire-Tighteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire-tighteners, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, cheap, and effective wire or rope tightener having means for grasping and twisting the wire at any point in the length thereof and also having means whereby the tightener is adapted to retain itself in position on the wire to prevent the untwisting of the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wire-tightener embodying a lever socket or eye, whereby a lever may be associated with the tightening device for adapting it to engage and twist the wire upon itself with any desired tension.
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective view of the tightener, showing the operation thereof.
Under the preferred embodiment of this invention the tightener is composed of a single length of wire or a continuous metal strip the central or immediate portion of which is bent in the form of an open center loop 1 of suitable size to receive one end of a lever, wherewith to impart rotary motion to the tightener to cause the same to twist the wire and take up the slack therein, as hereinafter particularly described. After forming the loop 1 the end portions of the strip or wire are extended across each other, as shown at 2, and provided with substantially parallel portions 3, forming jaws around which the wire (indicated at l) is adapted to be bent or twisted. After forming the jaws 3 the terminals of the wire or strip are bent to extend substantially at right angles to each other to form arms 5 and 6, the extremities of which are bent laterally, as shown at 7, and then fashioned into hooks S, pointing reversely to the direction in which the tightener as a whole is revolved for taking up the slack in the wire l. In the operation of the device the tightener s one or the other of the hooks S is engaged over the wire in the manner shown in the drawing, thereby locking the tightening device and preventing the same rotating in a backward direction and loosening the wire 4.
WVhile the device has been described as composed of a single length of wire or'a metal strip of suitable length, it will be apparent that the formation of the device is susceptible of considerable change in the form, proportion, and minor details, which may be accordingly resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
I claim 1. A tightener embodying a lever socket or eye in the form of a complete loop, oppositely-arranged spring-jaws extending away from said socket or eye, and integral arms extending substantially at right angles to each other and provided with terminal hooks, substantially as and for the purpose described.
' 2. A tightener composed of a single strip or length of wire, the intermediate portion of which is bent into the form of a complete loop to receive an operating-lever, and the terminal portions of which are first crossed and bent to form wire-engaging jaws and then extended substantially at right angles to each other to form angular arms, the extremities of said arms being bent to form retaming-hooks.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS o. DUNN.
Witnesses O. A. JONES, FRED F. \VEDEMEYER.
