This invention relates to a combined wire stretching and twisting device designed primarily for use in connection with tie wires for concrete molds employed in building construction, but it is to be understood that the device may be employed for any purposes for which it is found applicable, and the inven tion has for its obj ect to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of the class referred to for expeditiously stretching and twisting tie Wires with respect to mold sections for securing them together.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in amanner as hereinafter set forth, device ofthe class referred to including means to provide for the angularly positioning thereof with respect to the moldfor the purpose "of stretching the tie wire when looped around the mold. d
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device ofthe class referred to for twisting the tie wire at a corner of the mold and with the device further provided with means for straddling'such corner ofthe mold to prevent the shifting of the device during the stretching and twisting operation with respect to the' tie wire.
Further obiects ofthe invention are to provide, in a Amanner as hereinafter set forth, a

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in theV accompanying drawings, wherein is shownl an embodimentof the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

rlfhe combined wire stretching and twisting device in accordance with this invention includes an abutment element, a twister head, spacing means between the latter and the abutment element, a handle member, and. operating means for the twister head.
The abutment element is in the form of a yoke comprising a base member 1 and a pair of arms y2,3 provided with angularly disposed heads 4, 5 ofvgreater length than the width of the arms. The width of the heads 4, 5 corresponds to the thickness of the arms. The heads 4, 5 are disposed at opposite inclinations with respect to each other and in lengthwise section each head isof substantially triangular form. Each head has its forward or bearing face provided with a lengthwise extending groove 6 disposed at the longitudinal median thereof and constituting means for straddling acorner of the mold 7 to prevent Aslipping of the abutment element when the device is in active position for the purpose of stretching and twisting a tie-wire 8, asillustrated in Figure 1.
The base'member 1 is enlarged laterally in both directions, at the center thereof, as indicated at 9. VThe base member 1 at its center is formed withk an opening of two different diameters and with the smallest diameter designated 10 and thelargestll. The wall of the portion of largest diameter is threaded throughout and owing to the setting up of the opening of two different diameters a shoulder 12 is provided.r 'The portion of largest diameter of the opening extends from the rear face ofthe base member 1 to the shoulder 12 and the portion `of smallest diameter of the opening extends from the shoulder 12 to the forward face of the base member 1. A boss 13 is provided on the rear face of the member 1 and surrounds the opening.
Secured in the portion 11 of the opening formed in the base member 1 is a rearwardly extending tubular handie member 14 which has at its forward end peripheral threads for engaging with said threads in the base member 1. The handle 14 is of any suitable length and is stationary.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3 the twister Vhead comprises a rectangular body portion 15 provided with a pair of vertically extending openings 16, 17 and a pair of transversely disposed openings 18, 19. The openings 16, 1'7 intersect the openings 18,19 respectively. The openings 16 and 17 are positioned between the transverse center and the ends of the body portion 15. The opening 18 is positioned between the transversecenter and one end of the body portion 15 and further between the longitudinal center and one side face of said body portion. The opening 19 is positioned between the transverse center and the other end of the body portion 15 and between the longitudinal center and the other side of said body portion. The body portion 15 centrally thereof is formed with a transversely disposed opening 20. The walls of the openings 16 and 17 are threaded throughout. The openings 18 and 19 are provided for the passage of ends of the tie wire 8 and said openings 18'V and 19 are of greater diameter than the tie wire. Threadedly engaging with the walls of the openings 16, 17 are oppositely disposed clamping screws 21, 22 respectively. The screws are provided for clamping the ends of the tie wire 8 to the twister head. When the tie wire 8 is connected to the twister head the ends thereof extend through and project an appropriate distance from the body portion 15.
The operating means for the twister head consists of a shaft 23 provided with a crank 24 for the purpose of rotating it. The shaft 23 extends through the handle member 14, basemember 1 of the abutment element and into the opening 20 of the body portion 15 of the twister head. The shaft 23 is secured to the body portion 15 by a rivet 24. The shaft 23 is furthermore provided with an annular flange 25 in proximity to the crank handle 24 and which acts as a stop in connection with the rear end of the handle member 14.
With reference to Figure 2 the twister head has secured therewith a spacing sleeve 26 abutting Vthe base member 1 of the abutment element and said sleeve 26 in connection with the stop 25 and also in connection with the handle member 14 prevents the lengthwise shifting of the shaft 23 with respect to the abutment element.
In the modified form shown in Figure 5 the base member of the abutment element is indicated at 27 and which has formed integral therewith a sleeve 28 performing the same function as the sleeve 26. Otherwise than that as stated the form shown in Figure 5 would be the same as that shown in the other figures of the drawings.
The setting up `of the abutment element in the manner as shown permits of the same to be angularly disposed with respect to the mold 7 for the purpose of stretching the tie wire 8 and after the latter has been stretched to the desired extent the shaft 23 is operated which carrying the twister head therewith will twist the wire together in a manner to securely hold the sect-ions of t-he mold 7`together. The ends of the tie wire 8 are connected to the twister headV before the abutment element is arranged in angular position. As the abutment element is of yokeshaped form and provided with a pair of angularly disposed heads it can be inclined, with. respect to the mold 7, in an opposite position from that shown in Figure 1. The employment of the clamping screws 21, 22 prevents any possibility of the ends of the tie wire from slipping from the twister head during` the rotation of the latter to twist the tie wire 8 together.
It is thought the many advantages of a combined wire stretcher and twister device, in accordance with this invention and for the purpose set forth, can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What we claim is:
1 In a device for the purpose set fortha twisterhead provided with means for clamping a tie wire thereto, an abutment element including spaced, oppositely disposed inclined means for maintaining the device in a selective angular position when active and rotatable means connected with said element and with said head for operating the latter.
2. In a device for the purpose set forth a twister head provided with means Vfor detachably connecting a tie wire therewith, an
abutment element having a permanently inclined head to maintain said element atan inclination when active, rotatable means for said twister head and secured to the latter, and means for connecting said rotatable means to said element and spacing the twister head from the latter.
Y A device for the purpose setfortli comprising a yoke-shaped abutment element provided with permanently inclined, oppositely extending, grooved heads for selectively maintaining said element at different angles, a twister head positioned within said element, and rotatable means extending through said .element and secured tothe headl for rotating it. i
4. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a yoke-shaped abutment element provided with oppositely inclined, grooved heads for selectively disposing said element at different angles, a twister head positioned within said element, rotatable means extending through said element and secured to the head for rotating it, and means for connecting said rotatable means to said element and for spacing the twister head from the latter and further providing a handle member.
5. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a yoke-shaped abutment member having each of its arms provided with a grooved head of triangular contour, a twister head including means for detachably clamping a tie wire thereto, a rotatable shaft extending through said element and secured to the head for rotating it, and spacing means between the twister head and element.
6. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a yoke-shaped abutment member having each of its arms provided with a grooved head of triangular contour, a twister head including means for detachably clamping a tie wire thereto, a rotatable shaft extending through said element and secured to the head for rotating it, spacing means between the Y twister head and element, and a handle mem- 39 ber secured to said element and surrounding said shaft.
7. In a device for the purpose setl forth a twister head provided with means for clamping a tie wire thereto, an abutment element including a head having its forward face inclined to maintain said element in an angular position when active, and rotatable means connected with said element and with the twister head for operating the latter.
