ISAAC N. MORFORD, O13 WAYNESVILLE, ILLINOIS.
W'IRE-TWISTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. "Z, 198%).
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Isaac N. Monronn, a citizen of the United States, residing at l i aynesville, in the county of Dewitt and State of Illinois, have invented a now and useful ire-Twister, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in wire twister-s.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of wire twisters, and to provide a simple, inexpensive and etlicient tool, which will be light, strong and durable, and capable of enabling heavy spring wire to be readily coiled or twisted for connecting tie wires with fence wires to secure the latter to the fence post and for applying stays to the fence wires and for various other purposes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a reversible tool of this character, adapted to be conveniently operated at either side of a fence post, and capable of enabling the fence wires to be placed under the desired tension.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
in the drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective View of a wire twister, constructed in accordance with this invention and shown in position for twisting a wire tie at one side of a fence post. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the wire twister detached. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the wire twister. Fig. at is an end elevation of. the same.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
The wire twister is especially adapted for twisting the terminals of a wire tie 1 around the fence wire 2 at opposite sides of a fence post 3 of concrete, or other plastic material. It is composed of a bar or member l, having one end rounded to form a handle 5 and having its other end 6 flattened and provided with spaced wire-receiving openings 7, lo-
I l l cated at opposite sides of and slightly in advance of a stem 8 of a l -shaped wire-engaging member. The ET-shaped wire-engaging member consists of the said stem 8 and laterally extending arms 9, which are provided at their lower edges with notches 10, arranged in alinement with the openings 7 and forming seats for receiving the terminal portion of the wire. The stem, which is integral with the bar or member, is set at an obtuse angle to the latter and is tapered outwardly from the flat head or portion (5 to the laterally extending arms 9 The device is especially advantageous for operating on heavy number eight spring wire, and it is capable of enabling sutlicient force to be readily exerted to twist the terminals of the wire tie around the fence wire 2, and to strain the latter to the desired ten sion. The wire to be twisted is passed through one of the openings 7 and is extended outwardly or rearwardly beneath the over-hanging laterally projecting arm 9, and is engaged with the notch 10 thereof. The flat end portion 6 is placed against the fence wire and the device is then rotated around the same, thereby coiling the tie wire 1. The terminal of the wire is arranged in the opening 7 at the side of the tool adjacent to the fence post; and when the other end of the tie is twisted, the wire is placed in the other opening 7. The reversibility of the tool enables the wire to be more conveniently and neatly twisted at both sides of the fence post.
The wire twister is adapted for applying stays to the line wire of a fence and for splicing wires and analogous purposes; but owing to the facility with which it may be operated in applying the tie wires to posts, it will enable concrete fence posts to be advantageously employed in fence building and also the very heavy wires, which may be securely held even to a wooden post by staples. In practice the concrete fence posts will be provided in their front faces with grooves to receive the line wires.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A reversible wire twister including a bar or lever provided at one end with a substantially T-shaped wire-engaging member consisting of a stem and arms extending laterally from the outer end of the stem, the said bar or lever being provided at opposite sides of the inner end of the stem with wirereceiving openings.
2. A reversible wire twister including a bar or lever having a flat outer end and provided with a substantially T-shaped wireengaging'member formed integral with'the bar or lever and set at an obtuse angle to the same and consisting of an outwardly tapered stem and laterally extending arms provided at their inner edges with wire-receiving notches, said bar or lever being also provided at opposite sides of the stem and in advance of the-same with wlre-recelvlng openings located in substantial alinement wlt-h the notches.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
