COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming .part of Letters Patent No; 288,397, dated November 13, 1883.
Application filed June 27, 1883.
tion-Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in whichm Figures 1 and 2 are elevations respectivein closed and open position. j I
This invention relates to the construction of a combination-tool which, while adapted gen erally for various purposes, is especially de signed for usein erecting wire fences.
The invention consists in the construction bedded inone of the parts in casting the same. The portions d e are handles for the tool, and handle 6 is formed with a hole, f, to

receive a. ring, 9. Part A, beneath pin 0. is formed with the eccentric h, and below thisthe part B has a flange, c, the space between h andi Upon closing. the handles the eccentric h binds with greatpressure upon the wire and gives agrip for stretching the same. Such grip is strengthened by the strain on the wire, which tends to draw the eccentric into closer contact with the wire.
and B are formed with the cutting or shearing edges n, as shown, close to the pivot-pin 0, so as to have great power for cutting. In each (No model.)
of the jaws k l is formed a transverse groove, 19, whose purpose is to grip a wire for bending and shaping. I p
The whole device, except pin a and ring 9, is of cast-steel, and after casting nothing is required except to grind up the meeting faces slightly to make a fit and to bore out one of the parts to receive pin 0, and then rivet up the pin. Any desired tempermaybe given the cutting and nippingparts.
The object of the ring 9 is to enable the ap- I plication to be. made of a lever or crowbar in erecting fences. I The lever is passed through the ring after the fencing-wire is in the grip of the eccentric h '5, and fulcrumed either on the ground or back of the fence-post, and thus the Wire may be stretched to any degree of tautness. I
The whole tool is simple and very cheap. While designed especially for wire-fence construction, it becomes a convenient tool for va rious purposes about a farm, and can be used for cutting wire, &c., and as pinchers or nippers. I V
I claim as my invention.
1. The combination-tool composed of the two parts A B, pivoted at 0, part A having convex surface h and jaw 70, and part B having flange i and jaw Z, and each jaw provided with a shearing-edge, n, substantially as described. L
2. The combination-tool composed of the two parts A B, pivoted at 0, part A having convex surface h and jaw is, and part B having flange i, jaw Z, and ring 9, and each of said jaws provided with a shearing-edge, a, sub stantially as described. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. BARB.
