PLIERS. APPLICATION FILED JULY 15. m1.

signed to ARCHIBALD MQKAIG, ea, or BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
PLIERS.
Application filed July 15, 1911. Serial No. 638,722.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARCI-IIBALD MoKAio, S12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pliers and more particularly to that type in which provision 18 made for cutting wire.
The object of my invention is to so arrange the wirecutting portions with relation to each other, as to produce a strain upon the two sections of the pliers which tends to force them together, rather thanapart, thus avoiding the separating strain on the pivot which obtains in the class of pliers now in use.
This separating st am is produced where the inner edges of the cutting portions meet and pass in contact with each other in severing the wire.
My improved construction is specially deavoid this injurious sepa'ating strain and I therefore in following out my invention arrange the cutting portions in my pliers so that the outside edge of one cutting portion meets and passes in contact with the inner edge of the other cutting portion in serving the wire.
The above arrangement constitutes my invention and effects a forcing together of the plier sections, instead of a separating strain on the pivot.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a side view of my improved pliers showing its jaws in closed position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the jaws in open position. Fig. 3 is a section taken in the line w-w, of Fi 1, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the liers from the side opposite to that of Figs. 1 and 2, with a portion of the upper jaw cut-away.
Referring now to the drawings,-1 and 2 are the jaws of the pliers each having its respective handle 3 and 4:. A rivet 5 loosely joining the two sections forms the pivot. The jaw 1 carries the cutting portion 6 which is offset from the side face of such jaw and extends a short distance, below the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1914:.
gripping face of the jaw. The jaw 2 carries the cutting portion 7 which is recessed a short distance within the side face of such jaw and extends a short distance above the gripping face of such jaw. The gripping faces of the jaws are in direct opposition and co-extensive and the cutting portions 6 and 7 are arranged on their respective jaws, so as to permit the inside edge 8 of portion 6 to pass in contact with the outside edge 9 of portion 7 in severing the wire placed between them 1 thus the cutting j aws are reversed from the relative position of the two members constituting the pliers. The cutting;
action of these edges 8 and 9 arranged as shown, tends to exert a closing force upon the jaws, which therefore prevents undue strain on the pivot of the pliers.
It is apparent that the principle of my invention can be embodied in any kind of cutting device where one cutting portion moves toward and from the other or both cutting portions move relatively, and while this invention is shown embodied in pliers, I do not wish to limit myself to such tools, as power actuated or other apparatus or machines can be constructed according to my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is,
1. Pliers comprising twomcmbcrsarranged side by side to cross each other and being pivotally connected at the point of crossing,
each member having a jawoffset opposite that of the other member, one aw having a cutting portion offset from the side face thereof and extending beyond its inner face and the other jaw having a cutting portion recessed within the side face thereof and extending beyond its inner face, the side cutting edge of the offset cutting portion having passino contact with the outside cut ting edge of t ie recessed cutting portion.
2. Pliers comprising two members arranged side by side to cross each other and being pivotally connected at the point of crossing, each member having a jaw offset opposite that of the other member, one jaw having a cutting portion offset from the side face thereof and extending beyond its inner face and the other jaw having a cutting portion signature in the presence of two subscribing recessed Within the side face thereof and ex- Witnesses. tending beyond its inner face said cutting portions being arranged to pass each other ABCHIBALD MCKAIG 5 in a position reversed from the relative po- Witnesses:
