Description

geiten itatee atnt @ffice KELLIS HORDE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OE COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO v T. H. ALEXANDER, OF THE SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 70,569, dated Vovember 5, 1867.
@ligt tlgehule referat .to in tlgcsc (l-ities nttnt mit uniting pnt tf the stmt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, KELLIS HORDE, of Washington city, in the county of Washington, and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ot' this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation.
Figure 2 a view'o` the plunger or piston, showing the manner. in which it is attached to the gure oi'fan alligator, and V Figure@ is a. plan of the stock. l
The nature of this invention consists in the employment of n plunger or piston, which may be operated by compressed air, in combination with a llever so'urranged as to impart 'motion from the plunger to the device or toy used in connection therewith.
To enable o'thers skilled in the nrt to make and use my invention, I will new describe its construction und operation.
B represents the plunger, the outer cnd of which must fit accurately yet easily in tube A. The bore of' this tube'should be perfectly true and smooth. The outer or near end oi' the plunger should be furnished with some material upon which moisture will have no eiIect, either in contracting or expanding the same; for instance,
metal muy becast on the end, and turned down to iit the bore of tube A, as above described, or the plungerV may be furnished with a getta-perche button or knob. C represents the stock, whichis provided with chelongitudinal slot and apertures seen in iig. 3. g is a small platlorin, the object of which will be fully shown here ai'ter. E is a metal or wooden casing, intended as u retreat or hiding-place for the gure. D represents the Aiigure of an alligator, with its upper jaw hinged to its neck by means of a piece of flexible material. a s a vertical lever, which extends through an elongated slot in the under` into the upper jaw, and there secured.
'Ihe lower end of' this lever is pivoted in a slot near the inue'r end ol` the plunger.
The operation of the toy is as follows: Place a penny on platform y; now-put the tubeA to your mouth, and blow. The compressed air, acting upon the plunger, at once causes the figure to appear with its month open. When it reaches the penny, withdraw the air in the tube by inhaling, when the figure closes his mouth upon the penny, and retreats with it to his hidingplace. The upper jaw of the figure can be made to open and close its mouth very rapidly, while it is lying in a state of rest, bygently blowing and inhaling alternately;
I do not confine myself` to the exact'construction or device herein described, as, by means of the plunger and hinged lever or its equivalent, many modifications oi' my invent-ion can he easily arranged, which, though apparently different, will yet embody substantially the invention which I desire to secure by Letters Patent.
What I claim, therefore, and wish to secure, ,is- Y The plunger B, combinedv with tubeAnndlever-fti, for operating toys, substantially as described.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing as my own, aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
