BILLY TODD, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LADIES FANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.` 57,598, dated August 28, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BILLY TODD, of the city of Reading, in the county of Berks and Statt-e of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Im proved LadydsFan; and I do hereby certify that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the sume, reference being had to the drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the handle; Fig. 2, thumb-piece; Figz, pivot; Fig.4, spring; Fig. 5, attachment.
The nature of my invention consists in connecting the fen to its handle by a spring joint or hinge, whereby a ready and eusy mode of propulsion is obtained.
In the drawings the parts marked l, 2, 3, and 5 m ey be made of wood or any other suitable material. 4 may be made of gum or any other elastic substance which will answer the purpose.
On the lower end of the fan a projection an inch long is attached, which is called a thumbpiece7 or trigger, and by placing the thumb on the trigger :t little more than the weight of the thumb will bring the fan up with sufficient force. When you hold the fan in your htp or before you an easy movement of the thumb repeated will keep the fain in motion any lengt-h of time required without any other exertion.
What I'cleim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
