'IO ALL WH OM IT MAY CONCERN; y V Be it known that I, JOHN NEFF, Jr., 'of-Pultney, in the countyot4 Steuben, and State of NewrYork, have' invented a new and useful Improvement in Pruning-Shears; and I do 'hereby declare that the -following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation -of-the same, reference being had te the annexed drawing, making a part of this speciiication, in which the ligure is a side view of the ivhole improvement. The nature of my invention consists in making pruning-shears with one spring, Aand a lever to hold them open and not have them press so hard against the hand whenclosed as when open, and having the spring much .shorter than those of ordinary pruning-shears, thereby avoiding the liability of breaking springs. i
To enable others skilled in the 4art to make and use my invention, I will proceed todescribe its mode o construction and operation. I A ,l i l l i A is one of the parts; it constitutes the cutting-blade' and the handle, as shown in the figure. To this handle thespring F is fastened by a screw or rivet; l:ilse the catch Gis pivoted at the.end-of the handle. ihe j blade may be made any shape required, and the edge may be made sharp, for it is required to do the cutting. B is the other part; its blade is in shape to correspond with the blade A, and has no cuttingedge. To the handle the spring D and lever() are fastened, as shpjivn in the figure. Both handles may be made any shape that will please-theianey and hold the other parts sp'ecified. C'is a lever; it may he made in thc shape represented in the gure, or in shape to correspond with lother shaped handles. 4O ue end is heldinl the mortse inthe end of the handle by a. pir/ot so as to move freely. The other end is provided with a roller, when desired, or it may be made without the roller and perform its oiliee satisfactorily; this end may he fitted to the h andle of A to produce the required results; its length may be varied to produce different eil'ecn in opening the handles. This lever and the spring D may be applied to the other handle with the same result, if desired. isI the-spring that cadses the shears to open; it is made of a plane piece of steel slightly curved, as shown in the ligure. One endvis held to the handle of B by a screw. The spring may be curved so that with the screw the power of the spring may he increased or diminished at will. The other end-bears upon the lever C and thus causes the shears to open. E is a roller, fitted to the end of the lever C; its use is to prevent friction Vandwear at the end of the lever; it is made to move in a groove in the handle of the part A, as represeptcd by the dotted line in thc'figure. F is' a. small spring, fastened to the handle of the part A, as shown 'in.the figure; its use is tohold the catch. G in. anyrequiredposition. G is a catch that is used tohold the shears elosed'whn not in use; it is pivoted into a. plae'e fitted for it in the' handle of the part A, as shown in ,the figure. i
Having thus' fully described my invention, what I claim-as new,-and desire to' secure by LettersPatent, is-r- I claim the lever C and spring D, when made and arranged substantially as specified and Aused for the purpose set forth. I
Joss L. Law-Is,
CsahLEs KErenUM.
