RoaER-r J. HENDERSON ROBERT JAMES nnnnnnsolv, or DENISON, IOWA.
SCISSORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June as, rare.
Application filed September 19, 1913. Serial Noj 790,668.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT J. HENDER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denison, in the county of Crawford and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in scissors, shears and analogous cutting devices, the object of the invention being to provide a pair of scissors o the like with an improved pivotal connection whereby the blades will be caused to work with little or no friction and the blades readily separated for sharpening and replaced in position, when desired.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pair of scissors or the like which will possess advantages in points of eiiiciency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in View, this invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of scissors constructed in accordance with my invention, parts thereof being broken away to illustrate the bearing portion; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged top plan view of the bearing member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 indicate the levers of blades of the scissors. These blades are connected intermediate their ends by the improved pivotal connection and have at one end the usual handles 3. The blade 1 is provided adjacent its inner end with an opening 1 in which is arranged a ring 5 forming a raceway for the bearing balls 6. The blade 2 is provided adjacent its inner end with a tapering shoulder 7 against which the tapering portion 8 of the blade 1 is adapted to abut to limit the swinging movement of the blades. Theblade 2 is provided with a cut away portion 9 which forms a suitable shoulder 10 at the inner end of said cut away portion and upon which the inner end of the retaining plate 11 is adapted to abut, the inner end of said plate resting upon the cut away portion 9 and being secured thereto by means of the screw 12. It will be noted from the illustration disclosed in Fig. 2, that the body portion of the blade 2 closes one side of the opening 4, while the enlarged portion 13 of the plate 11 closes the opposite side thereof. A pivot pin let is provided and which extends through the body portion of the plate 11, through the opening 4: in the central portion thereof and then through the blade 2, thus pivotally connecting the blades and securely holding the body por tion of the blade 11 in its operative position.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that by removing the small nut 15 from the end of the pivot pin 14, the blades 1 and 2 may be readily separated for sharpening and replaced in position.
It will be noted that the raceway formed by the annular ring 5 is of suflicient diameter to permit of the bearing balls 6 to be arranged between the wall of the ring and the pivot pin 14, thus taking up all lost motion and eliminating friction between the pivot pin and the ring.
It will also be apparent that the device, as described and illustrated is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims.
That I claim is 1. A device of the class described including cutting blades, one of said blades being provided with an opening, a ring arranged within said opening forming a racewagy, said second blade being arranged upon one side of said opening having its flat face adapted to close the same, a plate secured to the second blade and closingthe opposite side of the opening of the first blade, a pivot pin extending through said plate and the blades and bearing balls arranged within said raceway and around said pivot pin.
2. A device of the class described including two cutting blades one of which is provided with an opening, a ring arranged within said opening forming a raceway, said second blade being provlded with a cut away portion forrnlng a shoulder, a reta1ning plate having one end mounted uponsaid cut away portion and abutting against sald shoulder, sald second blade havlng 1ts flat face closing one slde of the openlng 1n the first blade, the plate closing the oppo ing provided with an opening bearing balls 15 arranged therein, said second blade having its flat face closing one side of the opening, a retaining plate closing the opposite side of the opening and a pivot pin extending through said blades, as and for the purpose 20 set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT JAMES HENDERSON.
