Description

WILLIAM C. MCINTIRE.
`Improvement in Hair Blowing Attachments for Shears. N0. 118,625. Patented Aug. 29, 1871.
Y///Il,",?l" l Y., r., z a
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAIR-BLOWING ATTACHMENTS FOR SHEARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,625, dated August 29, 1871.
To all `whom it may coneern:
. le it known that l, \\'1LL1AM C. )IeINT11u1,ot' Washington city, in the eounty oiA lashington and District ot' (lolumbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Blowing Attachment for Shears; and I do hereby declare that the following,` is a full aml exact deseription thereof, reference being` had to the aeeompanying,l drawing,- making,` a part ot' this application.
My invention has for its object to provide a means for removing hair when eut by shears, more partieularly sueh as used by barbers, aml eonsists in applyingl behiml the ri vet ofthe shears, and between the levers', a rubber ball, provided with a` means for seeuring.; it in place, and having a nozzle arranged in line with the cutting-(alge ot' either blade, so that a euri-ent of air is forced in said direction and blows away the hairs as they are eut.
'.lo enable those skilled to make and use my said invention, I will proceed to describe its eonstruetion and operation, referringr by letters to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view ot' an ordinary pair ot' barbers shears with my improvement attaehed. Fig. 2 is a (zentral seetion at the line ma', Fig. il, and Fig. 3 is aside view ot' the rubber ball at right angles t0 that shown at Fig'. L.
Similar letters of reference denote the saine parts in the several iigures.
A represents the blades ot' a pair of shears, and B the handles. C is a rubber ball, whieh may be of the shape shown, or any other better adapted for the use it is intended for. On two sides of the ball creases, n, are formed, while the rubber is in a plastic state, adapted to reeeive the handles B of the shears, as shown, whereby the ball is held in place. This ball C has at one eml a nozzle or pipe, l), either straight, as shown, or curved, to give any desired direction to the current of air which is t'oreed through it.
The operation is as follows The ball is taken between the thumb aml lingers aml slightly eompressed, and then located between the handles I, aml when the pressure is relieved the handles of the shears timl their way properly into the creases (l and hold the ball in position, while the. ball, by its elastie properties, t'orees apart the. handles, thus openinl the blades A. \\`hen the blades are forced together the. ball is compressed and a current of air is forced through the nozzle b, and along, the cutting edge oi' the blade. blow ing away the hairs as t'A st as they are eut.
Ihis invention is designed for use when elip` pine,` the short hairs upon the neel; ot' a person, and to prevent their dropping inside the collar and down the neeli, although it may be advantageously used under any eireumstam-es. 'lhe blowing apparatus may likewise be advantageously employed in other euttingshearsy:` and I do not, therefore, wish to limit my invention to its eombination with barber-s shears', but having,` deseribed the construction aml operation of my hair-blowing attaehment,
\\hat I elaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination and arrangement, with a pair ot' shears, of a blowing; apparatus, substantially sueh as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
.Vitness my hand aml seal this 24th day ot' July, A. I). 1871.
