Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN U'rsnAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fullerton, in the parish of; Vernon and State of Louisiana, have invented a .new
and useful Improvement in Loading-Hooks,
of which the following is a specification.
T his invention relates to an improvement in loading hooks adapted more particularly for use in loading logs and the like, and one '-of' the principal objects of the invention is to provide a hook ofimproved construction, and having an adjustable cup and pin which may be removed when necessary,for sharpening or substitution of new parts.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved hook of the class described which will be extremely simple, durable, efficient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and'illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, of which,

In carrying out my invention I provide a hook, whose body portion is substantially right angular in shape and consists of a shank 5, having an eye 6 provided at its upper end for the reception of a hoisting cable or the like, and provided at its lower end with a right angularly extending foot or toe 7. Toward the inner end of the foot, the same is'provided with an opening or eye for the reception of a smaller rope or cable, not shown; The eye is indicated at 8, and the materialof the hook may be cut away adj acent the ends of the opening, if desired. The outer end of the foot is provided with a cylindrical enlargement 9 which extends substantially in parallel relation with shank 5, and which at its upper edge 10 extends or lies in a plane above the upper edge of foot 7 The cylindrical enlargement 9 is provided with a central tapered bore of down wardly decreasing diameter for. the recep tion of a: tapered pin 11. The latter is pointed at its upper endasat 12, and at its lower end is adapted to be mashed, or turned over, or flattened against the lower end of theenlargement 9, for riveting the pin in place, as
indicated at 13. The cup consists of a tapered body portion 147 having a central bore 15 for the reception of the cylindrical enlargement 9, over 'which said cup is adapted to fit The upper end of the cup is hollowed out or concaved as at 16, and the edges of the cavity are sharpened as atl'Z. Connecting bore 15 with the cavity 16 is a smaller tapered bore 18, through which pin 11 extends. The bore 15 thus terminates at its upper end in a shoulder 19 which rests upon the upper end of the enlargement 9. The lower portion of the body 14:, is provided, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3, with a radially extending recess or slot 20 for the reception of the outer end of foot 7, said slot or recess being of a width substantially equal to the thickness of the foot. This recess extends from the bore 15 to the periphery of the cup, and from the lower end of said cup to a point adjacent the shoulder 19. The cup thus engages upon the foot 7 in such manner as to be retained against rotary movement relatively to the foot. When it is desired to resharpen or replace the cup 14, the same may be lifted off the hook subsequently to the removal of the pin 11, said cup' being maintained against removal from the hook by reason of the tapered pin engaging in.
