THOMAS CAMPBELL.
Improvement in Pruning Shears.

1 1 F I I fla I G 4 THOMAS CAMPBELL, OF EAST PALESTINE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRUNING-SHEARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,234, dated January 30, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS CAMPBELL, of EastP-alestine,in the countyofOolumbianaand in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvments in Pruning-Shears; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figures 1 and 2 are elevations of opposite sides of my device. Fig. 3 is a like view of the front edge of the same. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the side shown in Fig. 1, with the detachable shoulder removed; and Figs. 5 and 6 are elevations of opposite sides of said shoulder.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention is an improvement upon pruning-shears having attached to the lower blade a supporting shoulder; and it consists, principally, in a shoulder made detachable, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified. It consists, further, in the means employed for attaching the shoulder to or upon the blade, substantially as is hereinafter shown.
In the annexed drawing, A and B represent two blades, constructed in the form shown, and pivoted together by means of a bolt, 0. which passes through both parts at the point of union with their shanks A and B. Extending horizontally across and within the outer face of the blade B is a groove, 1), having parallel sides, which are made slightly dovetailing so as to cause said groove to be widest at its inner side and enable the insertion and retention within the same of a corresponding shaped block, C. The upper edge of the block (3 projects horizontally outward beyond the face of the blade a sufiicieut distance to form a shoulder, and follows the curve of said blade upward to or near its point, in the usual man. ner, and for the usual purpose. In order that the shoulder-block thus formed may be secured in position, longitudinally, a stud, D, consisting of a small shank and large flat head, is secured within the inner face of said block near its forward edge, and extends horizontally outward until the outer side of its head is in a line with the inner face of the blade. A recess, 61, opening outward and corresponding in size and position to the stud D, receives the same and prevents the lateral or inward movement of the block. The withdrawal of said block is prevented by means of a fiatheaded screw, E, which is inserted within the inner end of the same in such position as to cause said head to extend over and embrace the contiguous edge of the shank. To enable the block to be removed, one side of the head of the screw E is cut away, so that when said side is turned toward the shank it does not project beyond the face of said block, and consequently offers no obstruction to its withdrawal.
The advantages obtained by thus attaching the shoulder instead of making the same inseparable from the blade, are, first, when removed, it enables said blade to be as quickly and easily sharpened as though no shoulder was employed; and second, it permits of the employment of shoulders having different heights with relation to the cutting-edge, so as thereby to enable one pair of shears to be used upon trees having bark of dilferent thicknesses.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new, is-
1. In pruning-shears, a supporting-shoulder, when made attachable to and detachable from the blade, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. Also, the means employed for connecting the shoulder-block O to or with the blade B, consisting of the groove 1), the stud E, the recess d, and the set-screw E, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of December, 1871.
THOMAS CAMPBELL.
