CHANCE DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,404, dated September 6, 1887.
Application filed June 25, 1887.
To aZZ 21171-0121, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, "WILLIAM HESTON and J OHN M. Arenas, citizens of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chance Devices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making partof this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of our invention. Fig. 2 is a view with the casing removed and showing the interior working parts. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line it a: of Fig. 1.
Our invention relates to devices for determining or marking chances or of the whirligig order; and it consists of adial on which revolves a pointer or hand actuated by a flywheel driven by a toothed wheel provided with a pawl and ratchet to engage the fly-wheel, and apneulnatic plunger provided with a rackbar engaging the toothed wheel aforesaid, whereby the toothed wheel is turned at will, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe the exact manner in which we have carried it'out.
In the said drawings, A is a back or support, to which are secured bearings a a for a spindle, b, which carries a fly-wheel, B, and a fixed toothed wheel, G, with which engages a spring-pawl, d, attached to a loose toothed wheel, D, also mounted on the spindle Z).
Secured to the support is a tube or barrel, E, in which is fitted a piston, 0, provided with a rod, 5 on one side of which are cut teeth h It, forming a rack-bar, which intermeshes with the teeth on loose wheelD. The lower end of barrel E is contracted to form atube, i, which projects through the casing 7;, on which is inscribed a dial containing any desired letters or characters, as shown.
Serial No. 242,469. (No model.)
Connected with tubc i is a flexible pipe, F, which terminates in a flexible bulb, F. The upper end of piston-rod g has a projection, n, which lies in a line with two elastic buffers, Z l, secured to the casing or support, and whereby the movement of the piston is limited. The outer end of spindle b is provided with a hand or pointer, 1?, arranged to indicate some position on the dial.
The operation is as follows: The bulb F be ing suddenly squeezed, the air in it is forced into barrel E through tube or pipe F and the piston and rod 9 forced upward with considerable force. The teeth on the piston-rod engaging the teeth on the loose wheel D causes it to rotate rapidly in the direction indicated by the arrow, and as springpawl d is arranged to engage wheel 0, rigid on the spindle, when the rotation is in this direction, the wheel 0, spindle b, flywheel B, and hand I? are rotated rapidly and given considerable momentum. Pressure being removed from beneath the piston, it and the rod drop down in the barrel, the loose wheel turning freely, as the pawl does not catch, and the momentum of the flywheel carries the pointeraroundthe dial until the friction overcomes the momentum and the hand comes to rest at some unknown or indefinite point.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The casing provided with a dial, pointer P, spindle b, fly-wheel B, loose cog D, fastratchet or wheel 0, and pawl d, in combination with barrel E, piston c, toothed bar 9, tube or pipe F, and bulb F, all constructed, arranged, and operated as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
YVILLIAM HESTONQ JOHN M. AKERS.
