Description

(No ModeL) J. W. BLODGETT. FRICTION CLUTCH.
Patented May 27, 1884.-
INVENTOR 7 M .ittorney ing A by'means of a pin, G, passing trans- UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
JOHN WESLEY BLODGETT, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FRICTION -CL-UTCIH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,453, dated May 27, 1884-.
Application filed March 6, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. W. BLODGETT, of
- Chicago, in the county of Oookand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Friction-Clutches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to friction-clutches; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, having for their object to produce a device which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
To this end it consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved friction -clutch. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings designates a cylindrical casing, having a central perforation, B, sur' rounded by an annular post, 0, upon which is journaled a hub or sleeve, D, the periphery of which is provided with several notches, E.
F is a cap or cover secured upon the easversely through the post 0. This cap or cover has a key or feather, H, adapted to enter a notch or recess, I, in the sleeve D, which will thus be'made to rotate with the said cover. The sleeve D has a radially-projecting arm, J, to the outer end of which is attached a spring, K, connecting the said arm with a pawl or dog, L, having at its inner end a sharp tooth, M, fitting in any one of the notches E in the sleeve D, and hearing at its outer end against the rim or periphery of the casing A.
From the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. When motion is imparted to the arm N in the directhe motion will be imparted through sleeve D, arm J, and spring K to the pawl or dog L,
the casing, permitting the top arm and the sleeve D to revolve without affecting the position of said casing. \Vhen, on the other hand, the motion is reversed, the tooth M of pawl L will be forced into. the notch E of sleeve D, in which it is at the time adjusted, thus forcing its outer extremities against the periphery of the casing A, and causing the latter to revolve to an extent determined by the stroke of the arm N. The several notches E,provided in the sleeve D for the adjustment of the tooth M of dog L, enable me to regulate the tension of the spring K. 1
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a friction-clutch, the combination of a cylindrical casing, having a central perforation, an annular post, a sleeve or hub on this post, provided with notches, a feather or key adapted to enter a notch, I, in the sleeve D, applied to the cap F, a pawl, L, an arm, J, and a spring, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
2. The combination of the casing, its cap F, an annular post, a sleeve or hub having notches, the feather H, and the spring'actuated dog or pawl, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Jornv WESLEY BLODGETT XVitnesses:
