To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM C. PRITCH- ARD, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Registers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in registers, and more particularly to that class adapted for use in connection with liquid dispensing pumps, for the purpose of counting the number of strokes of the piston.
An object of this invention is the provision of a register, which employs a rotary dial having indication marks thereon, ranging from zero to any desired number; the said dial being arranged to be actuated by a pump piston in such manner that upon the operation of the latter, the dial will be rotated; the said device being further provided with means for releasing the dial and automatically returning it to zero.
A further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture; reliable and efficient in use; and readily operated.
This device may also be employed in connection with any machine having a reciprocating movement; and by slight changes the device may be made to count consecutively to a large number by the addition of a series of dials.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view taken on the line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a detail face view of the drum, showing the same removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by similar characters of reference, throughout the several views, the numeral 10, designates generally my improved register, which comprises a supporting plate 11, formed with a projecting annular flange 12, and with a central opening passes a bolt 14, in connection relative to the flange 12. A closing plate 15, engages the flange 12, and is formed with a peripheral head or rib 16, whereby the same is held thereon, against displacement, through the assistance of the bolt 14, which latter is threaded and held in position by the head 17, and nut 18.
A drum 19, is journaled for rotation upon the bolt 14, between the sides of the flange 12, and has attached thereto a spiral spring 20, the opposite extremity of which is attached to the plate 11, and serves to normally hold the drum in one position, and return the same to that position upon its release.
A circular flange 21, is formed upon the drum 19, and extends in parallel relation to the closing plate 15, which flange 21, is formed with an inwardly extending flange 22, the same projecting inwardly in parallel relation to the drum 19, and provided in its exterior surface with a series of ratchet teeth 23.
A dial 24, is secured to the flange 21, and is provided with a series of graduations 25, ranging from zero to any required number. These said graduations are exposed through the opening 26, formed in the closing plate 15. The zero graduation is normally positioned for exposure through the opening 26, by the spring 20, and the stop 27, which is formed for the flanges 21, and 22, for engagement with the pin 28, which projects from the plate 11, in the path thereof.
An extension 29, is formed with the plate 11, at one side of the flange 12, for cooperation with a similar extension 30, formed upon the plate 15. These extensions 29, and 30, produce a guide 31, in which is slidably mounted an operating rod 32; the lower end of which is constructed as shown at 33, to produce an adjustable means to contact with the upper end of the piston rod (not shown). The opposite end of the rod 32, is tapered as at 34, to produce a beveled face 35, for engagement with the end 36, of the flange 12, by means of which, upon its upward movement, the operating finger 37 is moved from its engagement with the teeth 23, in order that the drum 19, may be returned to zero; while the rod 33, is at the end of its up stroke.
A spring 38, is connected to the rod 32,
13, through which and the depending second extension of the plate 11, and serves to yieldingly force the rod 33, both inwardly and downwardly.
A spring pressed pawl 39, is mounted upon the flange 12, and extends through an opening formed therein for engagement with the teeth 23, which holds the dial I against any retrograde rotation through the action of the spring 20. This pawl can be released by hand when desired, to permit the dial to return to zero.
Any sort of means can be employed for securing the register to the casing of a dis pensing pump or other machine (not shown) such as indicated by 40.
It should be understood in this connection that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
A short tooth in the ratchet wheel is provided, so that it is in engagement position with the operating finger 37, when the capacity of the counter has been reached, said tooth being short, permits the operating finger to pass said short tooth without en gagii'lg, thereby preventing mechanism being jammed; but said short tooth is adapted to be engaged by the pawl in the usual manner.
From the foregoing disclosure taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be manifest that a register is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to pro tect by Letters Patent is l. A register providing a casing, a drum plate pivoted for rotation within said cas ing, an inwardly extending flange on said plate, ratchet teeth on said flange, a dial secured on said drum plate between it and one side of the casing, said dial provided with graduations which show through an open-1 ing in said casing, a stop on said flange, a pin on said casing in the path of said stop, a spring within the casing for holding the stop against said pin, extensions on said casing, said extensions forming a guide, an operating rod slidably mounted in said guide, the upper end of said rod having one face beveled, a finger 011 said rod for engagement with said ratchet teeth to rotate said drum plate against the action of the spring, and means on the casing to cooperate with the beveled face of the rod whereby the latter on its upward movement is thrown out of engagement with the teeth to allow the drum to be returned to its initial position.
2. A register providing a casing, a drum element pivoted for rotation therein, ratchet teeth on said element, graduations on said element adapted to show through an opening in the casing, a spring adapted to normally hold the drum element against rotation, extensions on said casing forming a guide, an operating rod slidably mounted in said guide, the upper end of said rod being beveled, a linger on the rod for engagement with said ratchet teeth to rotate said drum againstthe action of the spring, means on the casing to cooperate with the beveled face of the rod whereby the latter on its upward movement is thrown out of engagement with the teeth to allow the drum to be returned to its initial position, and means for normally holding said rod in lowered position, said means comprising a downwardly extending lug on said casing, and a spring adapted to be secured. at one end to said lug and at the opposite end to said rod.
