LINDLEY A. WVRIGHT, ORIN L. PEROIVAL, AND WILLBERT E. ANKR'UM, OF CI'IAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS.
COIN-OPERATED MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 585,730, dated July 6, 1897.
Application filed August I, 1896. Serial No. 601,64=3. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LINDLEY A. l/VRIGHT, ORIN L. PEROIVAL, and WILLBERT E. ANK- RUM, of Ohampaign, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Coin- Operated Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in coin-operated devices; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View showing our improvements in side elevation and the casing in section. Fig. 2 is a peripheral view of the disk.
A represents a casing in which a standard 1 is located and supports a shaft 2. On the shaft 2 a disk 3 is secured, said disk being provided with parallel peripheral flanges 5 5. Pins or wires 6 are secured to the flanges 5 and extend from one to the other, said pins or wires being spaced apart, and graduations are made on the face of the disk in line with said pins or wires, each graduation being numbered as desired. A rubber pin or pointer 7 projects downwardly fromthe framework and projects slightly within the space between the flanges 5, so that when the disk is rotated the pins or wires 6 will engage the rubber pointer and retard the rotation of the wheel or disk, finally bringing it to a full stop. The number on the disk indicated by the pointer when the disk comes to rest denotes the number of cigars or other articles to be given to a purchaser.
The face of the casing A is made with a recess or depression 8,-in which a slot 9 ismade for the accommodation of the coin to be inserted into the machine. A spring 10 is secured at one end to the inner wall of the casing at a point some distance above the slot and projects downwardly, so as to normally cover said slot. A rod 11 is attached at one end to the free end of the spring-arm 10, and at its other end is provided with a hook or dog 12, adapted to engage a ratchet-wheel 13, carried by the shaft 2 and adapted to rotate with the disk 3. From this construction and arrangement of parts it will be seen that gage the ratchet-wheel and turn it. Motion is thus imparted to the disk, and it will revolve several times or until stopped by the frictional contact of the rubber pin 7 with the pins or wires 6.
Our improvements are very simple in construction and effectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of our invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence we do not wish to limit ourselves to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a coin-operated machine, the combination with a casing having a slot therein, of a disk mounted in said casing, parallel peripheral flanges on said disk, pins or wires extending from one flange to the other and spaced apart, said disk having graduations, a rubber pin to be engaged by said pins or wires on the periphery of the disk, and de-:
vices adapted to be operated by a coin passed through said slot in the casing, for rotating said disk, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LINDLEY A. WRIGHT. ORIN L. PERCIVAL. IVILLBERT E. ANKRUM.
