N V r 1 I I I/ NPETERS FHOTO-LITHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GUSTAV A. SCHULTZ, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATCHMENS DETECTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,192, dated December 12, 1876; application filed November 8, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV A. SCHULTZ, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Watchmans Detecter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form, a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a watchmans time-detecter, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, which fully illustrates my invention, the figure is a front view of a clock embodying my invention, a part of the dial being broken away to show the interior.
A represents the clock-case. and a the post for the hands. 0 is the minute and D the hour hand. These are carried upon the post a simply by friction, provision being made by slots to take up any wear in course of time, thus doing away with pins, shoulders, and washers. Gr represents an open drum, formed with a raised dial, E, on its face, and having the hour-hand D, forming a part thereof, under the hub or center-piece H. Around this drum is placed a strip of paper, I), held upon suitable pins or teeth b. This B is the dial,
'strip b should be marked with the hours corresponding with the numbers on the raised dial E. This drum being made open is entirely free for the operation of the puncher or needle. The raised dial forming the face of the drum enables the use of a blank strip of paper-in case the printed supply should run out-which can be accurately read off before removing from the drum.
The puncher attachment consists of a vertical lever, J, pivoted to a plate, K, within the case, and projecting through a slot in the bottom thereof. At the upper end the lever J is provided with two eccentric prongs or arms, I I, which operate against a horizontal lever, L, carrying near its center a puncherneedle, d. The lever L is pivoted at one end, and held down on the eccentrics by means of a spring, 8. This device possesses the advantage of being a right-and-lefthand clock at once, and can be operated in either direction. It is not liable to damage from violence used by the watchman.
The puncher-needle (Z is made with a cutting-edge, 41:, so that if the watchman should tie the lever J back, in order to derange or stop the clock, the revolution of the drum carrying the bulletin-strip b against the outting-edge simply splits or destroys the bulletin, which would show the proprietor at once in what way it was done, and, at the same time, the clock would keep on running, and any subsequent action of the needle would be noted on the paper at the hour it occurred.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The puncher-needle d, provided with the cutting-edge 412, in combination with the open drum, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the lever L, carrying the puncher-needle (Z, and the double-acting lever J, with eccentrics I I, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAV A. SCHULTZ.
