To all lwhom t may concer/1t Be it known that I, EDWIN E. BARTLETT, oi` Hyde Park, in the county of Suli'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arbor-Presses, of which the following is a speciiication.
The present invention has reference to improvements in presses and more particu- 1 0 larly to improvementsin arbor presses.
` The primary object vof the invention is to improve the efficiency of this class of press, as will appear from the following description.
i5 The invention consists in such novel Afeatures of construction, operation and combination of parts as shall hereinafter be described and pointed out in the claims.

The frame of the press represented in the drawings is of a well known type, comprising the base 10, and the cross-bar 11 supported above said base by the posts 12, 12.
Extending through and guided by an aperture in the center of said cross-bar is the v rtical ram orplunger `13 provided with he gear teeth 14. In mesh with the latter are r the two pinions 15 and 16 formed on shafts journaled in the cross-bar 11. Respectfully carried by said shafts are the gears 17 and 18 in mesh with the pinion 19. Secured to the latter is the gear 20 driven by a pinion 20a integral with a ratchet-wheel 21 loose on the pinion shaft 16, Said ratchet-wheel Specification of Letters Patent.

The latter is adapted to be engaged by the pawls 26 and 27. Said pawls are loosely mounted on the stationary stud 29 projecting from the cross-bar 11. The independent movement of said pawls is limited by the pin 30 on the pawl 26 engaging the slot 31 75 in the pawl 27. Secured to the outer pawl 26 is the bar 32 on which is supported and guided the weight 33. Pivoted at one end on the latter is the rod 34 extending through an aperture in the outer end of the stud 35 80 projecting- Vfrom the cross-baril. The outer end of said rod is provided with the forwardly projecting handle 36.
To set the device, the rod 3st is pulledy outwardly, the weight 33 to the inner end of the bar 32. This movement of the weight will tilt said bar and thus bring the pawl 26 secured thereto into engagement with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel 25. secured to the pawl 26 and engaging the pawl 27 will cause the latter to be pressed with the pawl 26 into engagement with said ratchet-wheel. Vhen this attachment is thus set, as power is intermittently applied to the plunger through the herein described mechanism connecting` it with the handlever 22, the pawls will successively engage the teeth of the ratchet-wheel 25 and thereby positively prevent any upward movement or release of pressure of said plunger while the lever 32 is being` raised. This holding of the pressure is the essence of the present invention. Heretoiore, the only means that has been employed for holding the pressure, while the lever 22 is being raised, is to grip the hand-wheel 23, which, when a great amount of pressure is being applied requires an eXtra man to operate, and even then, be- Qause of the necessary torsional weakness of 110 by the handle 36, thereby sliding 85' The leaf spring 39 90` the shafts of the mechanism connecting the hand-wheel to the plunger', the pressure is not sufficiently held. It is to be noted that my device operates directly on the pinion which meshes with the rack on the plunger, so that the ypressure is positively held.
The pressure of the pawls 26 and 27 on the ratchet-wheel sired, by varying the distance said weight is moved from the center of the bar 32, which would be of particular importance if a frietioii disk and a suitable pawl were used in place of the ratchet-wheel and pawls shown.
The pawl 27 is longer than the pawl 26 by one-half the distance between the teeth of the ratchet-wheel, which has the eiiect of, but is much stronger than, a ratchet-wheel having twice the number of teeth and only one pawl.
The pawls 26 and 27 mayy be readily thrown out ofy engagement with their ratchet-wheel by sliding the weight 38 to the outer end of the bar 32. The pin 40 secured to the stud 29 limits the latter move-k ment of the pawls. (Figs. 2, 3 and 4E.) f While it is preferred to employ the specific construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, it will be understood that this construction and arrangement is not essential except so far as specified in the claims and may be changed or modified within the scope of the claims without departing from the broadery features of the invention.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letn ters Patent: i n
1. In a press of the character described, the combination, of a work supporting member, a plunger in lateral alineinent therewith, mechanism for operating said plunger to apply pressure to work placed on said supporting member, with means separate said plunger operating mechanism for positively holding the said pressure while said plunger operating mechanism is at rest.
2. In a press of the character described, the combination, of a work supporting member, a plunger in lateral alinement therewith, means .for reciprocating said plunger, said means including a pinion in mesh with a rack on said plunger, means for rotatino` said pinion with means adapted to be moved into engagement with a member carried by said pinion for preventing rotation thereof in one direction but allowing rotation thereof in the opposite direction.

5. A press of the character described, having, in combination, a work supporting member, a plunger in lateral alinement therewith, means including a pinion 'for reciprocating said plunger, a pawl engaging member carried by said pinion, ra pawl in engagement with said pawl engaging meinber to prevent rctationthereof in one direction'with means for Vvarying the pressure of said pawl on saidy pawl engaging member, said pawl not a part of said means for reciprocating said plunger.
6. A press of the character described, havyin combination, a work supporting er in lateral alinement therewith, means including a rotatable shaft for reciprocating saidy plunger, a ratchetwheel secured to said shaft, a stationary stud, a pawl pivoted on said stud and held in engagement `with said ratchet-wheel by gravity, a second pawl pivoted on said stud and held in engagement with said ratchetwheel by afspring secured to the 'former pawl, saidy pawls being of different lengths, all substantially for the purpose described.
7. A press of the character described, having, in combination, a work supporting member, a plunger yin lateral alinement therewith, means including a rotatable shaft for reciprocating said plunger, a ratchetmember, a plung f wheel secured to said shaft, a pawl sustained in engagement with said ratchet-wheel by gravity, a second pawl of a different length sustained in engagement with said ratchetwheel by a spring, with means for disengaging said pawls from said ratchet-wheel. n
8. A press of the character described, having, in combination, Va work supporting member, a plunger ,iny lateral alinement therewith, means including a rotatable shaft for reciprocating said plunger, a pawl engaging member secured to the rear end of said shaft, a pawl pivoted on a stud, with means for swinging said pawl in and out of engagement with said pawl engaging mem- Baer, said means including a rod having its 13G outer end extending toward the front of the inachine, said pnwl not d part of said means for reciprocating` said plunger.
9. An attachment of the character de scribed adapted to be applied to an arbor press, comprising a. ratchet-Wheel adapted to -be secured to a pinion shaft in mesh with a rack on the plunger of said press7 a pawl pivoted on a Stud adapted to be secured to the freine of said press, a substantially horizontal bei' secured at its center to said pawl, a Sliding Weight on Said bar, with means adapted to be supported by the frame of said press for sliding said weight on said bar to swing said pawl in and out of engage- 15 nient with said ratchet-Wheel for the purpose set forth.
