SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,323, dated January 6, 1885.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT ScHMIn, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Zurich, in the canton of Zurich and Republic of Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Hand-PressureRotatingApparatus and I do hereby declare the following to'be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of ref erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to mechanism for converting a linear motion to a rotary motion, having for its object to produce a rapid rotary motion by the pressure of the hand in such a way as to make it useful wherever such a motion of inferior power in the form of an instrument is required or may be appliedas, by example, for dentists boring-tools, for small mechanics, engravers, model, clock, and watch makers tools, for demonstrations in schools, such as physical and optical experiments, for driving fans, &c. This object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation of the apparatus with the rotary motion of the tool-receiver placed at the top of the casing. Fig. 2 is partly an elevation, and partly shows the interior of the apparatus, with the rotary motion placed on the side of the casing. Fig. 3 represents a vertical cut of the handle and top part and inside view of the mechanism contained in the casing.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The hollow handle a bears a lever, b, with its pivot at c, and the lower part of which is provided with a tongue, (1, on one side and a fiat spring, 6, on the other side. The lever b, on its upper extremity, is provided with a toothed segment, f, gearing with the pinion g, placed in the center of the casing h, which is fast on the handle a. On the pin which bears the pinion g is fastened the small beam t, connected to the slides 76 is by links on m.
The wheel a, which rotates on the projecting ring 0, making part of the casing, has a beveled-gear rim gearing with the pinion 1), fast on the shaft q, which is guided in the box 0', screwed to the casing h. s is a fly-wheel fastened to the shaft g.
In Fig. 2 the shaft q, with its fly-wheel s, is placed at a right angle with the casing 71, and receives its rotary motion by the spur-wheel t and pinion a, all the other parts of the mechanism being the same as in Fig. 8.
To use the apparatus, the handle a is held in the hand and a pressure is given to the tongue (1, which recedes, the upper part of lever b acting on the pinion g, beam i, links or m, and slides 75 k, which are pressed against the inside periphery of the rim of the toothed wheel a, setting it in motion, and with it the small shaft q, witlr the fly-wheel s. In re leasing the tongue (Z the spring 6 makes it to return to its first position, and with it all the other moving parts of the mechanism except the shaft q, with the fiy-wheel s, and the wheel a, which continue to rotate in the primitive sense, the wheel a being released of the press ure of the slides k 7:. In repeating the pressure of the hand a new impulse is given each time to the revolving parts, and a rapid and nearly regular motion obtained that can be made available for a great number of purposes, as any suitable shape can be given to the shaft q to receive the desired tools or other objects.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a hand-pressure rotating apparatus, the combination of lever 12 with springe and toothed segment f, acting on pinion g, beam 2', links at m, slides 7.: k, the toothed bevel-wheel a or spur-wheel t, and the pinions p or a, with the shaft q and fly-wheel s, all the mechanism being inclosed in the handle a and casing 71, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
