ALBERT P. MCGRAW, OF MCGRAW, NEIV YORK.
SKIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,775, dated February 20, 1900.
Application iilefl August 16 1898.
To all whom, it muy concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT P. MCGRAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mc- Graw, in the county of Oortlandand State of New York, have invented certain new and' useful Improvements in Skirts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in skirts, having for its object to provide a skirt which may be readily adjusted as to size at the waist without impairment of its outer appearance and wit-hout leaving a gap at the placket.
.With this object in view the invention consists of a skirt constructed in the novel man- In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which like letters and figures of reference indicate corre` spondin g parts, Figure 1 is an elevation of the upper part of a skirt embodying the invention, the parts being shown in the position they occupy when the skirt is adjusted to the person; and Fig. 2 is a similar view with the two sides of the skirt-placket detached, one of said sides being folded down to more clearly illustrate the invention. g
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A designates the upper part of a skirt, the main body B of which may be formed in any suitable manner and of any desired material or combination of materials. At the upper edge of the skirt is attached the usual waistband 1, and at the rear thereof or at one side, if preferred, is formed a placket 2, to one edge of which is connected an extensionpiece 3, which when the placket is closed is site edge thereof, and preferably the lower edge 4 of the underlying portion is disconnected from the body of the skirt for a greater portion of its length. v
Upon the inner face of the band l,adjacent the edge of the placket, is secured a suitable fastening device 5, 'which in the present instance is in the'form of ahook, and this hook is adapted to engage with any one of a series of eyes 6, secured at separated points along the upper edge of the underlying or extension strip 3, upon the outer face thereof. By,
sgi-in No. 688,705. Nt model.)
means of the hook and eyes the extensionpiece may be kept in its extended position regardless of the adjustment of the waistband, and the wearer is therefore not subjected to the inconvenience consequent upon the folding under of said piece. Moreover, it will be noted that the hook and eyes are located intermediate the contacting faces of the extension-strip and one side of the placket, and hence cannot come into contact with and abrade or bruise the skin of the wearer.
In order to close the placket 2, an adjustable strap 7 is employed, secured at one end to the upper edge of the overlying portion of the placket and carrying asnitable fastening device 8 at its opposite end. This strap in the present instance is doubled upon itself and may be lengthened or shortened by means of the slide9. Of course it will be obvious that any other form of adjustable fastening device may be employed in lieu of the strap 7, and other securing devices may be substituted for the hook 5 and eyes 6, or the hook may be secured tothe extension-piece 3 instead of to the waistband, as shown, and the eyes to the waistband instead of to the extensionpiece.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention, what I claim is-- A skirt formed with a waistband and with a placket, an extension-piece extending from one edge of the placket and adapted to underlie a portion of the skirt beyond the other edge, a plurality of fastening devices, as 6, secured to the upper edge of one of the overlapping portions and a fastening device, as 5, secured to the other of the'overlapping portions aud adapted to be detachably engaged with either of the other fastening devices, and an adjustable fastening device on the waistband to secure the skirt around the waist of the wearer, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT P. MCGRAW.
