STOCKING-SUPPQRTER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Ptented Sept. 26, 1911.
Application filed' November 27, 1909. Serial No. 530,094.
To all whom 'it may concem:'
Be it known that I, HARRY C. HAZARD, a
i citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improve- `ments in Stocking-Supporters, of which the following' is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved stocking supporter.
One object. of the invention is to provide a stocking with a garter device (permanently attached to the stocking-sai garter device when fastened on the leg extending only across the front part of the stocking leg.
lThe invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing annexed hereto.
Figure` 1 shows a stocking and the improved garter device applied to a humanleg. Fig. 2 is a side view of a stocking having the improved garter device. Fig. 3 is a view of the top end of a stocking and the garter device at the frontl of the leg, and shows the garter in the fastened position. Fig. l1 is a similar view to that seen in Fig. 3, but shows the garter device unfastened. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section showing the garter parts when'in the buttoned position.
For the better carrying-ont of this invention I have rovided the usual toot, a, and usual short. eg, b, of a stocking with an upper ribbed portion, c, of relatively greater length than usual. This upper ribbed portion by being longer than usual serves to reach above the calf of a persons leg, as shown in Fig. 1, and my garter device is attached to the front part and near the top end of said upper ribbed portion.
Referring to the drawing a suitable eye or loop, 1, is attached to' the stocking-leg, in the present instance by stitches, 2. This eye or loop may be made of woven or other flexible fabric, such as tape. The narrow band, string or tape, 3, is suitably attached to the stocking by one end (in the presentinstance by stitches, 4) and the other end is free. These two parts-the flexible loop and the free band-are to be connected, when the stocking is on a persons leg, b a button, 5, that is slidably attached'on the and, 3. \The said. button has a central cross-bar 6, with an eye through the button each side of the bar; the band, 3, extends through both eyes of said button and' across the outer side of slidabl the said bar, 6, and thereby the button is slidably attached on theband and may be adjusted by sliding it along the band, until the buttonhas a position trat will suit for the diametrical size of the persons leg. The
free end of the band, 3, and the button 5,'
should be assed through the flexible loop, 1, and by rawing the free end of the band the garter parts 'will he tightened aroundthe leg and when taut these parts will be so retained b the free end of said band being frictiona ly engaged between the underside of the button and the bight of the said loop,
1. The etiect ot this will beto retain these engaged parts in their buttoned or tightened position. I
It will be understood this garter device, when fastened on the persons leg, extends horizontally across the stocking leg only at the front; the garter does' not entirely encircle the leg as garters commonly do; this is shown in Figs. 1 and 3. l
A garter thus constructed, applied, and used will support the stocking in a comfortable manner, and will be free of undue tightness or other inconvenience to the wearer.
The flexible loop, and also band, may be made of any washable material. What is termed a band is intended to cover a tape, strap, cord or otherllexible strand'wlnch has one end attached to the stocking and the other left free and unattached.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters 'Patent is,
'isV
The combination with a stocking leg of a A flexible band having one end secured to one side of the leg and the other end of the band free and provided with a button that is attached thereon, and a flexible loop secure to the opposite side of the leg and adapted for the passa e therethrough of both the said band an( button, said band extendin through the eyes of the button and its ree end engaging the ybight of the loop when in the buttoned position.
In testimgny wliereotlaliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY o. HAZARD.
