GEORGE J'. MILLER, OEYBALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO WISE BROTHERS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, A FIRM COMPOSED OF-EDWARD I-I. WISE, LEO I-I. WISE,
AND HENRY E. WISE.
COMBINED wAIsr-LINE SUPPORTING ANnADJUs'rING MnANs non GARMENrs.
T 0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CombinedVaist-Line Supporting and Adjusting Means for Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in waist line adjusting and supporting means for garments and has particular reference to a combined supporting strap to be engaged by the suspender tab which will also form part of an adjusting means about 'the waist line of thergarment.
It has heretofore been common to provide around the waist line of garments, straps which form loops, through which latter the suspender ends may be passed so as to support the garment. In addition to the supporting strap-loops, garments have also been provided with adjusting tabs or Ylacings, either at the sides or in thefrear of the garment to eect an adjustment'of the garment about the waist ofthe wearer. As heretofore practised, however, these adjusting'and supporting devices have been separate and independent of each other and therefore a matter of expense both in material and labor in the manufacture of the garment. By means of the present invention the supporting and adjusting devices are combined, and are positioned on the garment where they are accessible for ready adjustment.
rIhe invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,-
Figure 1 shows a fragment of the upper portion of a garment to which the improvement is attached, which latter is shown in side view. Fig. 2, illustrates the same, the adjusting tape however being untied and hanging loosely. Fig. 3, shows a top plan or edge view of the garment with the adjusting tape drawn and tied as when adjusted, and also shows the loops formed in the strap for receiving the suspender ends or tabs. Fig. 4, shows the garment in top plan to illustrate the positions of the improved devices thereon, and Fig. 5, illustrates the garment in front view.
In the present instance the improvement is shown as applied to a pair of drawers but the same may be applied to other garments.;
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 6, designates a drawerY garment which in lthe present instance has a facing 7 around the upper edge, and is provided with a ily-opening 8, of usual construction at the front.` By means of my invention,it is unnecessary to provide any verticalV slits extending from the upper edge downwardly except the fly or placket opening. Ateachside of the ily or placket opening, and at a point where the front suspender-ends are ordinarily located, I provide the garment with a strap 9, which preferably extends substantially parallel with the upper edge 10, of the garment. This strap has its two ends securely fastened tothe garment by means of stitches 11, and between its two secured ends said strap has two spaced apart perforatio-ns 12, and 13, respectively. stance these perforations have the form of circular holes or eyelets whose edges are button-hole stitched.l A tape 14, extends along the inner side of the strap 9, and one end 15, of said tape passesthrough the perforation 12, while the other end 16, of th'e'tape extends through the perforation 13, in the strap. It will thus be understood that in the present instance a portion of the tape.
extends along the inner side of the strap from one perforation to the other and that the two ends 15 and 16, project through the perforations respectively from the inner to the outer side of the strap. While this particular arrangement of tape is not essentialV In they present in-V Speciicationof Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 21, 1915 *f y Application filed January 2s, 1915. serial No. 4,814.
strap, tape and garment material together` in a vertical line that crosses both the strap and tape.A This row of stitches 17 also forms two loops 13 and 19, respectively in the strap, so that the perforation 12, will be located in the looped portion18, of the strap, while the perforation 13, will be located inthe loop 19, of said strap. It will thus be seen that the strap 9, is stitched at its oppositeends and also midway between its ends to' the garment, as usual in supporting straps, and that it also has two tape ends that project from said two loops in such a way that when those ends are drawn toward each otherand tied as atQO, the` two attached ends of thestrap will be drawn toward each.
other which produces folds or a plait 2l, in the strap and takes up the garment around the waist by drawing onthe latter through the securing stitches l1.
By. securing thetape and strap to the garment by the stitches 17, which also. form the loops in the strap, the tape cannot be lost because of its permanent attachment.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is,-
1. The combination with a garment having a waist-band, of a strap having. its opposite ends secured to the waist-band, said strap also being secured tothe band between its opposite ends to formtwo loops, and means for drawing the said two loops towardr each other to shorten the distance between said opposite ends.
2. A garment having a suspender-engaging strap secured in a looped lcondition thereto and tapeends depending from spaced-apart points on the looped strap for shortening the latter and adjusting the garment about the waist.
3. A garment having the opposite endsotl a suspendenengaging strap secured thereto and formed into a loop, and two tape ends projecting from the strap from opposite sides of a point midway betweenzthe two attached ends of thestrap. said tape-ends when drawn together and tied serving to adjust the garment about the waist.
4. The combination with a garment, of a strapy having its opposite ends, secured to the garment near theV upper edge of the latter said strap also.. being secured tothe garment between its ends to form two loops and al tape-end projecting from each loop of the strap which ends when drawn together will adjust the garment about the waist.A
5, The combination with a garment, of a strap having its opposite ends secured to ythe garment said strap having spaced-apart vperforations and a tape having its ends projecting through the` two perforations in the t strap said ends when drawn together serving to, adjust the garment about the waist.
6. The combination with a garment, of a strap having its opposite ends secured to the garment said strap having spaced-apart per-forations, a, tape extending along the side of the strap between said perfor-ations andl Copies of this patent may; be obtained for ve cents eachLby addressingE the Commissioner of Patents,
