SKIRT.

To all whom it 'may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM PADERNACHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to skirts and has for its object the improvement of that general type of skirt which is illustrated in my prior patent No. 853,993 dated May 21, 1907.

In the structure of the patent referred to, I provide a novel means whereby the skirt may be adjusted Within wide limits to impart to the waist-band practically any size desired.

The present improvements have particular reference to novel means whereby the length of the skirt may be adjusted to a substantial extent to render the same shorter or longer, as occasion may require or at the will of the user.

Among the characteristics of the present invention, are the formation of the body of the skirt whereby the front thereof may be shortened or extended without interfering with the back portion thereof, means for supporting the front portion of the skirt and for fastening the same in its adjusted positions, and means for concealing the fastening devices whereby the adjustability ofthe skirt may vnot mar the neat finished external appearance thereof.

The foregoing, and other features of the invention will be apparent from the detail description of the same hereinafter contained Whenread in connectionwith the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and wherein a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation looking from the back of the skirt toward the front thereof, Fig. 2 is a similar view from the front showing the front secured in one of its adjusted positions, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through a portion of the front of the skirt. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the front of the skirt in one of its adjusted positions and from which the finished and neat appearance of the skirt may be seen.

Referring more specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to corresponding parts in the several views, A represents the body of the skirt formed at the back in any convenient manner, preferably to secure a wide range of adjustment at the waist, the means illustrated herein (see B) being that disclosed in my former patent, to which I have above alluded.

The waist-band, represented at C, is stitched to the back of the skirt and extends to points approximating the sides of the skirt, indicated at D, whence the band is extended to form straps E, Ef, one of which is provided with a buckle e for a purpose as will hereafter more fully appear. At the points D, but arranged on the inside of the skirt, I secure a stay or band F, preferably covered steel, adapted to constitute a support for the front portion of the skirt and also as a carrier for certain members of the adjusting devices now to be pointed out. The front of the skirt represented at G is normally free at its upper edge and is extended to a substantial distance above the waist-band O to enable the same to be folded over the supporting stay or band F. At the opposite sides of the center of the front G, I provide two series of vertically disposed eyelets H, which are adapted to be engaged by hooks I on the supporting stay or band F, the two airs of hooks facing in opposite directions, t e better to insure against accidental unfastening of the skirt when once adjusted. To secure the front at any point desired, it is simply necessary to pass the tongues of the hooks through the proper row of eyelets, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, the insertion of the tongues of the hooks being facilitated by pivoting the same as at J to the steel band F, and the shanks of the tongues being provided with flat surfaces K engaged by spring fingers L struck out from the steel, the cooperation between the spring and tongue being such that the latter may be held in their open or closed position.

To cover the eyelets and hooks, I provide four plaits M arranged to overlie the hooks and eyes, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and when the front is folded back over the stay or band F the exposed portion of said front is held flat upon said band through the medium of the straps or extensions E E', buckled together as is obvious. When the skirt is attached to the user, it is, of course, preferable that the usual belt be used to surround the entire Waist and cover the straps etc.

While I have herein disclosed one s ecific embodiment of the invention, it is to e understood that changes and alterations in the special parts and details shown may be made Without in the least departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim:

l. A skirt of the character described provided With means for securing the same to the user, a front extension on the body of the skirt, a supporting stay or band secured to the body and freely related to the front eX- tension over which the front extension may be folded, means on said stay or band for securing the front extension in adjusted positions, and means adapted to be secured around the front extension and to overlie said securing means on the stay or band.

2. A skirt of the character described provided With means for securing the same to the user, `and means enabling the adjustment of the length of the front of the skirt including a stay or band secured to the body, an extension on the front freely related to said stay or band and arranged to be folded thereover, in combination with devices on the extension and band adapted to engage to support the front of the skirt and secure the same in its adjusted position.

A skirt of the character described provided With means for securing the same to the user, and means enabling the adjustment of the length of the front of the skirt including a stay or band secured to the body, an extension on the front freely related to said stay or band and arranged to be folded thereover, in combination With devices on the eX- tension and band adapted to engage to support the front of the skirt and secure the same in its adjusted position, said devices including several series of eyelets arranged in vertical series on the front extension and hooks on the stay or band adapted to pass through the eyeleted portions.

A skirt of the character described provided With means for securing the same to the user, and means enabling the adjustment of the length of the front of the skirt including a stay or band secured to the body, an extension on the front freely related to said stay or band and arranged to be folded thereover, in combination With devices on the eX- tension and band adapted to engage to support the front of the skirt and secure the same in its adjusted position, said devices including several series of eyelets arranged in vertical series on the front extension and hooks on the stay or band adapted to pass through the eyeleted portions, and plaits on the front extension adapted to cover the hooks and eyes, substantially as described.

A skirt of the character described provided With means for securing the same to the user, and means enabling the adjustment of the length of the front of the skirt including a stay or band secured to the body, an extension on the front freely related to said stay or band and arranged to be folded thereover, in combination With devices on the eX- tension and band adapted to engage to support the front of the skirt and secure the same in its adj usted position, said devices including several series of eyelets arranged in vertical series on the front extension and hooks on the stay or band adapted to pass through the eyeleted portions, the hooks at the opposite sides of the center of the front facing in opposite directions, substantially as described.

6. In a skirt of the character described, means for securing the same to the body of the user, and means for adjusting the length of the front thereof including an extension on said front, a stay or band freely associated with said front extension, and over Which the extension may be folded, and independent separated devices on the stay or band for securing the front extension in adjusted position upon said stay or band.

7. A skirt of the character described provided With means for adjusting the size of the Waist thereof and for securing the skirt to the body of the user, a stay or band secured at its ends to the side portions of the skirt and normally free relative to the front, a front extension adapted to be folded over said stay or band, means on the stay or band for securing the extension in adjusted positions, and means adapted to be secured over the folded extension of the skirt and over said stay or band.

8. A skirt of the character described provided With means for adjusting the size of the Waist thereof and for securing the skirt to the body of the user, a stay or band secured at its ends to the side portions of the skirt and normally free relative to the front, a front extension adapted. to be folded over said stay or band, means adapted to overlie the folded extension of the skirt and over said stay or band, in combination With other devices for fastening the front extension in its adjusted positions to the stay or band.

9. A skirt of the character described rovided with means for adjusting the size o the Waist thereof and for securing the skirt to the body of the user, a stay or band secured at its ends to the side portions of the skirt and normally free relative to the front, a front extension adapted to be folded over said stay or band, and straps secured to said side portions of the skirt adapted to be secured over the folded extension of the skirt and over said stay or band, in combination With other devices for fastening the front extension in its adjusted positions to the stay or band, said fastening devices comprising several series of vertically disposed eyelets in the front extension, and hooks on the stay or band adapted to engage the same, and plaits on the front extension adapted to overlie said hooks and eyes, substantially as and for the purpose described.

10. A skirt of the character described provided with means enabling the adjustment of the length of the front of the skirt including a band, an extension on the front arranged to be folded to give the front the desired length., and interfitting devices carried in part by the extension and in part by the band for securing the front in its adjusted position.
