LABEL-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,931, dated May 9, 1893.

To all whom itmwy concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and Territory of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card or Label Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to improvements in card or label holders, and it has for its general object to provide a cheap, simple, and durable holder, embodying such a construction that while the card or label may be readily placed in the holder, it can only be removed with great difliculty.

A further object of the invention is to provide a card or label holder adapted to be readily adjusted to receive cards or labels of various sizes.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a card or label holder embodying section 5, arranged in vertical series, each of which is adapted to support and assist in the retention of the card above it, and is also adapted to permit of the introduction of the card below it and assist in retaining the same.

With the foregoing ends in view the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings in which Figure 1, is an elevation of my improved device; a card being shown in position therein. Fig. 2, is a section of the same taken in the plane indicated by the line 00, cc, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is an elevation of a modified form of holder. Fig. 4, is a section of the same taken in the plane indicated by the line y, 3 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5, is a section taken in the plane indicated by the line a, z, of Fig. 3, or at right angles to Fig. 4, and Fig. 6, is a vertical, transverse section of a number of sections arranged in vertical series.

Referring by letter to the said drawings and more particularly to Figs. 1, and 2, thereof: A, indicates a board or base upon which my improved device may be mounted and secured by any approved means.

In carrying out my invention and forming the sections B, B, I take a strip of tin or other suitable material of a suitable width, and bend the ends a, of the same so as to form the shoulders I), and set the body 0, out from the board or base to which the section is secured by screws d, or the like taking through the said ends a. The body 0, of each of the sections B, B, of which two are employed is prodescribed.

In the practice of my invention, the sections B, B, are secured to the board or base at a suitable distance apart as shown, and they are so arranged that the flange m, of the upper section B, will rest above the slot 6, while the flange m, of the lower section B, will rest below the slot e.

In order to insert the card or label into the holder, the same is introduced edgewise through one of the slots e, preferably that of the upper section B, and is pushed entirely through the same when its lower edge will rest upon the flange m, of the lower section B, and its upper edge will engage the flange m, of the upper section B, whereby it will be seen that the card is prevented from vertical movement. When the card has been placed in position as just described, it will be further perceived that its vertical edges will engage the shoulders I), of the sections 13, B, and it will thereby be prevented from lateral displacement.

In forming the construction disclosed in Figs. 3, to 5, I take a piece of tin or the like and first form the display opening f, in the body 0, thereof, after which I bend the piece as shown so as to form the attaching ends a, and the shoulders I), and to set the body 0, out from the board or base to which the device is attached.

On opposite sides of the display opening f, preferably above and below the same, I provide slots e, which are formed by cutting portions of the body and bending the same inwardly so as to form the flanges m, which rest above their respective slots e, as shown. In this construction the card is inserted in substantially the same manner as hereinbeforo described, until its upper and lower edges rest in engagement with the flanges m, and the shoulders b, when the card will be securely retained in position.

In Fig. 6, of the drawings, I have shown a number of the sections B, arranged in a vertical series, whereby it will be readily perceived that each intermediate section will support and assist in the retention of the card above it, and will permit of the introduction and assist in the retention of a card below it, which card is supported by the succeeding lower section. 3

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings it will be readily perceived that I have provided a device of an exceedingly cheap and simple construction, in which a card may be readily inserted and securely held against casual displacement.

By reason of the peculiar construction of my improved device, it will be further perceived that when a card has been once placed 1 in position it can only be removed With great difliculty, which is an important desideratum.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1'. A card" or label holder, substantially as described, comprising ends adapted to be at- 1 pose set forth.

2. A card or label holder, substantially as described, formed by a plurality of sections, arranged a suitable distance apart and re spectively comprising ends adapted to be attached to a base or'support and a body provided with alongitudinal slot and an inwardly extending flange; the said body being set out from the attaching ends or resting in a plane ,forward of the same so that when the section isattached to a base orsupport, a space will 'be aiforded between the body and said base or support, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
