COMPARTMENT-TRUNK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 495,033, dated April 11, 1893.

Be it known that I, GEORGE JAMES GRIF- FITHS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tampa, in the county of Hillsborough and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Compartment-Trunk, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in compartment-trunks, the object thereof being to provide a traveling trunk which may be used, in case of astoppage of some length at any place, as a bureau, thus obviating the necessity of transferring all of its contents to an ordinary bureauand then replacing them when ready to depart.

With this object in view my invention consists in providing a trunk, containing a series of compartments, arranged so as to be reached individually to remove their contents, and also adapted to be entirely removed, when necessary, the top of the trunk being so arranged as to avoid the danger of falling While the trunk is in use.

Further objects and advantages of my improvement will appear in thefollowing description, the novel features thereof being pan ticulariy pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trunk embodying my improvements, with the front doors thrown open, the top back, and the writing or cutting table extended. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the trays above the writing or cutting table detached.

A represents the shell or casing of the trunk, the front of which is formed by the folding doors, 8 B,which are adapted to be locked together at their meeting edges.

The lid or cover, G, comprises one-half the top of the trunk and is hinged at its inner edge to the said top (or the edge of the stationary portion thereof) whereby Wh en thrown back, as shown in Fig. 2, it will rest upon the stationary portion. Attached to the inner side of the cover or lid is a compartment, D, for toilet articles, the cover E, of said compartment comprising a mirror, which when raised exposes its inner surface and is held in position to be used by the edge of the lid or cover of the trunk.

The body of the trunk is provided with the sliding drawers, F F, the upper one, F,resting upon a horizontal guide-partition f, and

above said upper drawer is a sliding table, G, adapted to be used as a Writing table or a cutting table, which may be drawn out, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to project beyond the front of the drawers. The front edge of the table is supported in its extended position by small swinging braces, H H,Which are adapted to engage notches in the front edges of the casing or shell. To the upper surface of the table, near its rear edge is secured the vertical guiding web, I, between which and one side of the casing or shell is arranged the hatbox, K, and between which and the opposite side of the casing or shell is arranged the flat tray, L, and the angular tray, M. The angular tray rests upon the guiding web, I, and similar guides, 2' i, attached to the side and back of the casing and arranged at their upper edges flush with the upper edge of the web, I, said tray filling one-half the space which is inclosed by the convex cover or lid of the trunk, the above described toilet box filling the remainder of the space.

The hat-box, K, is provided with a removable partition, k, as shown clearly in the drawlogs.

The toilet box, the flat tray, L, and the angular tray, M, are provided with suitable hinged covers as shown.

I desire it to be understood that changes in the form and proportion of the parts of the herein-described trunk may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make such alterations as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention,what

I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In a trunk, the folding front, the packing-drawers arranged in the lower part or body of the trunk, an upperlid or cover, hinged at or about the center of the top of the trunk and adapted to fold back upon the stationary portion of said top, the sliding writing or cutting table arranged above the packing-drawers, the removable trays and hat box arranged above the writing or cutting table, and the toilet-box secured to the lid or cover and provided with a lid comprising a mi rror, substantially as specified.

2.
