SPECIFICATION lforming part of Letters Patent No. 424,008, dated March 25, 1890.

To all whom it may concern/.-

Be it known that I, JUAN P. LAvANDEYEA, of the city of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and use ful Improvement in a Compartment-Trunk; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention has relation to travelingtrunks; and it consists in a trunk having a hinged front adapted to open out and expose the whole front. The lower part or body of the trunk is provided with sliding` drawers, one above another, adapted to be drawn out when the front of the trunk is opened. An open compartment is also provided therein for hats, dto. The front half of the top or lid is hinged about the center of the top of the trunk and adapted to raise, while the rear half is xedly closed. A horizontal writingboard of the width and length of the interior of the trunk is provided in grooves or on slides adapted to be slid partially out, when the upper lid is open, for Writing purposes, and when entirely pulled out discloses a compartment underneath for packing purposes. The rear half of the upper part is provided with drawers and pigeon-holes for the accommodation of stationery, ttc., which are secured together and can also be slid out on a slide and removed, when it is desired, in order to use such upper compartment for packing purposes only.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows my improved compartment-trunk with the front open, disclosing the drawers. Fig. 2 shows the front closed, the lid opened, and the writing-board drawn out, as for writing purposes. Fig. 3 shows the lid open with the writing-board and pigeon-holes removed, disclosing the upper packing-compartment.

A is the hinged front, preferably, for convenience, divided in two and connected by hinge-joints e.

B B B2 are the main packing-drawers, and C the open compartment.

F is the upper lid hinged at the center of the upper part of the trunk by the hingejoints f. The horizontal writing-board G is of about the width and of the length of the inside of the trunk and secured therein on the slides g.

A compartment P is provided in the upper part of the trunk underneath the Writingboard G, and is accessible by withdrawing the board G from the slides g.

The pi geen-holes and stationery-drawers E are provided in the rear half of the upper part of the trunk on slides b, and may be removed by drawing the same out on the said slides.

A lock (l is provided on the upper lid and d on the front lid. The trunk is also provided with the usual handles h h.

In consequence of the rough handling which baggage is apt to receive, adjustable legs are inconvenient and undesirable. Th ese I do away with, and do not claim.

I am 'aware that Letters Patent have previously been granted for desk facilities provided in trunks. This feature I do not claim, broadly; but what I do claim is my construction as herein described.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

l. In a trunk, a hinged front adapted to open outward, in combination with sliding main packing-drawers and compartment, an upper lid hinged about the center of the upper part of the trunk, a sliding removable horizontalwriting-board,andpigeon-holesand compartments providedin the fixed rear half of the upper part of the trunk, substantially as hereinbefore set forth and described.

2. In a trunk, a hinged front A, in combination with the sliding main packing-drawers B B B2 and the compartment C, the lid F, hinged at or about the center of the upper part of the trunk, the sliding removable board G, the removable pigeon-holes and compartments E, provided in the iixed rear half of the upper part of the trunk, and the compartment P, substantially as hereinbefore set forth and described.
