UNITED STATES PATENTqOFFICE.

THEATRICAL MAKE-UP BOX.
Application filed J'anuary.13,'1927. Serial No. 160,898..
This invention relates to a theatrical makeup'box for use by actors and actresses both as a handy carrylng case for their makeup paraphernalia and as a dresser stand to be placed on. any convenient shelf or support in the dr-esslng room where the light, mirror,
and the makeup articles'handily arranged in the one section having a panel hinged there.
to and arranged to fold out to an extended .position to provide a mirror, preferably of.
about the full length of the case, one of the case sections having an electric light mounted therein and also providing prefen ably a drawer to receive a powder box, while the other section provides a compartment for a jar of cold cream,-and also a number of drawers for such incidentalsa's lipsticks,
rouge, eyebrow pencils, and'the like. The.
invention provides, therefore, in asingle compact case to be handily carried about storage space for the usual makeup paraphernalia, not otherwise conveniently transported from place to place, and also provides ample light and a mirror of sufficient size for applying the makeup, better than is oftentimes available especially in poorly equipped dressing rooms. Furthermore, when the case is closed and locked the mirror is well pro- 'tected against breakage and the compartment and drawers are held closed to keep the make-up articles in their proper orderly arrangement. a
An additional feature of'the present article consists in the provision of two plug receptacles on the case. one of which receives,
the plug of an extension cord for the light, and'the other of which provides a convenient place for plugging in a curling iron or the like. oftentimes the dressing rooms are not equipped with sufficient-outlets to enable the use of an electric curling iron and this additional need is also .taken care of by the present invention.
The invention. is illustrated in' the accompanying drawings wherein i I Figure l-is' a perspective vi-ewshowing a make-up box constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being shown'operied for use;
fects.
shown in Fig.- 1.
' the like.
Fig.2 isa central. horizontal section, the case being shown closed and locked as when carried about; and
Fig. 3 is, a rather diagrammatic view to illustrate the electrical connections provided on the. case.
Thesame reference numerals are applied to the same parts throughout the views.
The makeupbox of my invention. as stated above, is in the form of a case provided with a handle so that it may be carried about by.
the user as partof his or'her personal ef- The case consists of a main section 4 provided with a handle, jas indicated at 5, and a cover section 6 hinged as at 7, the
coversection being provided with the usual:
hasp 8 and clasps 9 to. lock thecase to prevent accidental or unauthorized opening thereof. A mirror 10 is mounted in a panel 11 hinged as at12 tothe main section 4 so as to swing out to the extended position An electric light 13 is provided on a switch socket 14 in an upper compartment. 15 ofthe main section. there being a partition wall 16 defining a lower compartment in which a drawer 17 is slidablyreceived to be pulled out. as shown in Fig. 1. This drawer is preferably used for the storage of a powder box and is provided of a size suitable for this purpose. The cover section provides a lower compartment 18 for the storage of a jar of cold cream or This compartment is normally closed by the swingable door 19. Above the compartments are three or more drawers 20 for such incidentals as lipsticks. eyebrow pencils, rouge, and the like. These drawers are also arranged to pull out as indicated. When the door 19 and all. of the drawers are closed and the mirror. panel 11 is swung inwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2, the cover section 6 may be swung to the closed position shown in Fig. 2 The panel 11 fits in the main section in front of the drawer 17 and lies flush with the outer edges of'the walls of the main section. as most clearly appears in Fig. 2.5 so that the closing of the cover section thereon serves to hold the mirror securely. against breakage, the
drawers at the same time being held closed in the compartment 15 behind the light. .The reflector serves to insure the best possible illumination which, of course, is highly desirable when applying makeup. I prefer to provide a plug receptacle 22 in the top wall of the main case section to receive the plug 23 of an extension cord 24; which may be led to any convenient light socket. The plug receptacle lies flush with the top of the case and does not detract in theleast from its appearance. The advantage in its provision lies in the fact that the extension cord can be plugged in at the receptacle when the case is set up for use as a dresser stand, as shown in Fig. 1, and the plug may be pulled out when the case is about to be folded up, the extension cord being received in the com partment 15 or being placed in one of the drawers. I also provide a second plug receptacle 25 connected in parallel with the light 13, as shown in Fig. 3. This additional receptacle permits the plugging in of an electric curling iron 26 or may serve for other purposes. It lies flush with the top wall of the main section in a manner similar to the plug receptacle 22. Inasmuch as there is always apt to be a scarcity of outlets in a dressing room this additional plug receptacle on the case becomes of considerable advantage. Obviously, the curling iron is so connected that it receives current at the same time as the light and, so far as the plug receptacles are concerned, the curling iron may be plugged into either so long as the extension cord 24: is plugged into the other receptacle.
The handiness and convenience of the article herein described will be readily appreciated inasmuch as it provides a case suitable for the storage of all of the makeup articles, and at the same time may be set up in a dressing room to serve as a dresser stand, in which case the handy arrangement of the makeup articles and the good illumination afforded by the light and the mirror all serve to obviate the inconvenience and annoyance so often occasioned by the lack of facilities in the different dressing rooms encountered.
