M ABBEY LABEL HOLDING FRAME. No. 462,071.
Patented 00 12. 27, 1891 Wm" BEBE 5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARIETTA ABBEY, OF DAILEY, MICHIGAN.
LABEL-HOLDING FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,071, dated October 27, 1891.
Application filed April 24, 1891. Serial No. 390,237. (No modeL) To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIETTA ABBEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bailey, in the county of Cass and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Holding Frames; andl do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in label -holding frames in which billing-cards and other notices and announcements may be securely'clamped; and it consists in a certain construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth, the essential features of which are pointed out particularly in the claim.
The object of the invention is to provide a clamping-frame in which a display-card may be readily placed and from which it may be quickly and easily removed and that is so constructed as to firmly retain a card in position when placed therein. This object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my irnproved device as attached to the side of a freight-car and having a blank billing-card secured therein. Fig. 2 is-a perspective view of the device in a slightly-modified form, but of substantially the same construction, showing said devicemounted on abase and containing an announcement-card and provided with means for attaching it to any object desired. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section transversely through Fig. 1.
Referring to the letters of reference, A indicates a swinging bail or frame; rectangular in form, the lower edge of which, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, is hinged at a to the side B of a car or base-support and is adapted to lie against the face thereof.
0 indicates a latch or lever that is formed integral with the crank-rod D, that extends at a right angle thereto, and is journaled at its ends in the plates h, secured to the base 13 on each side of the frame A at its upper edge,
the horizontal portion of said crank-rod being adapted to engage over and extend across the upper edge of said frame.
E indicates a catch secured to the support B, and which is adapted to securely retain the latch or lever 0 when engaged therewith.
To place a billing-card in this improved clamping-frame, the latch C is disengaged from the catch E and its free end is thrown up to the posit-ion shown by the dotted lines 0 in Fig. 3, which carries the crank-rod D free from the upper edge of the frame A, permit'ting said frame to be swung outward at the top, as shown by dotted lines Ain Fig. 3. The billing-card F is then placed between said frame and the face of the base B and the frame swung back against it. The latch or lever O is then swung down and secured under the catch E, causing the crank-rod D to engage across the upper edge of the frame A, the arrangement of parts being such that the crank portion of the rod D will bear upon the frame before the lever O has attained a vertical position, requiring said lever to be sprung down to engage it under the catch E, whereby the crank portion of the rod D presses upon the frame A, forcing it tightly against the card F, in which position it is held by spring tension, thus securely retaining ,said card in place, obviating the use of tacks and pockets, as commonly employed.
G indicates a weather guard or housing that projects over the frame to protect the card from the rain.
In Fig. 2 the frame A is shown hinged. to a detachable block or base H, that is provided with screw-eyes c, which afford means for at taching it to an object. The horizontal rod I, which is formed integral with the latch or lever O, is not crank-shaped, as is the corresponding rod D in Fig. 1, but is provided with the curved arms f, formed integral therewith, that are adapted to engage the upper edge of the frame A, said rod I being journale-d in the loops or eyelets e, secured in the upper edge of the base H. By extending the rod I along the upper edge of the block 11 and employing the arms f to engage the upper edge of the frame A the block or base H, on which said frame is mounted, may be shorter, .as it does not need to extend at the ends to support the bearing-plates Z), as would be the case if the binding-rod D of Fig. 1 were employed.
This clamping-frame, as shown in Fig. 2, is designed for the use of'business men to hang upon the office-door when going away to announce the time of their return, and it may also be employed to announce the office-hours and such other matter, as desired. The operation of this frame is substantially the same as that of Fig. 1, as will be readily understood. It will also be apparent that this improved clamping-frame may be attached to the back of picture-frames and employed to secure the picture therein.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
, In a device for holdinglabels, the followin g conjoined elements: a base, a rectangular frame hinged at one edge to said base,a shaft journaled on said base adjacent to the swinging edge of the rectangular frame, said shaft being bent so as to extend into the path of
