To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. CURRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Maysville, in the county of Mason and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cases or Holders for Cards, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.

The invention relates to a case or holder for advertising cards, labels, bills, notices, etc.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of cases or holders for containing advertising cards, labels, tags, and the like and to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive case or holder designed to be secured to a Wall, car or other supporting surface and adapted to protect such cards, labels and the like from the weather and capable of firmly and securely holding the same and of being readily operated to afford access to the cards or other contents of the device to enable the same to be changed when desired.

A further object of the invention is to provide a case or holder adapted to be sealed if desired and capable of enabling its clamping or holding means to be supported the cards are being placed in the case or holder and removed therefrom.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates an outer or main frame of substantially rectangular form constructed of metal or other suitable material and provided at the side and top with projecting ears 2 adapted to receive suitable fastening devices for securing the case or holder to a wall or other supporting surface. The outer rectangular frame is provided with a back 3 constructed of sheet metal or other suitable material and provided at its side and bottom edges with flanges 4 which are bent around the exterior of the sides and the bottom of the outer frame and engaged with exterior longitudinal grooves 5 of the same as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and l of the drawings. The upper portion of the sheet metal plate is secured upon or against the inner face of a transverse strip or bar 6 which is provided at opposite sides of the center with forwardly projecting studs 7 which engage openings 8 in the back plate adjacent to the upper edge thereof as clearly illustrated in Fig. 8 of the accompanying drawings.

While I have shown and described the preferred way of securing the back plate to the outer or main frame it will be apparent that the said back plate may be attached to the outer or main frame in various other ways.

The upper portions 9 of the sides of the outer frame are enlarged to support a protecting inclined top bar or member 10 and are provided with inclined slots 11 curved slightly and diverging upwardly from the vertical plane of the back plate'and receiving pivots or journals 12 of a clamping frame 13 of substantially rectangular form which fits snugly within the outer frame when the clamping frame is in its closed or engaging position as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The enlarged portions of the sides of the outer frame and the top bar or member 10 form a projecting hood which is adapted to protect the contents of the case or frame from the weather.

The clamping frame which may be constructed of metal or any other suitable material isprovided with cross wires 14 forming a Wire netting and secured to the top, bottom, and sides of the clamping frame at the inner edges thereof and adapted to hold the cards, labels, bills or other contents of the case or holder firmly in engagement with projecting spurs 15 of the back plate whereby the contents of the case or holder is firmly held against the said back plate and effectively prevented from slipping. The journals or pivots 12 are formed integral with the top' bar of the clamping frame and preferably pierce the upper ends of the side bars adjacent to the upper terminals thereof which project beyond the top bar to form extensions 16. These extensions 16 are adapted to abut against the back plate when the clamping frame is swung to an upwardly inclined position and they support the clamping frame in such elevated position while the bills or other contents are being placed in or removed from the case or holder. The bottom of the clamping frame is interlocked with the bottom of the main or outer frame by means of lugs 1? which project downwardly through openings 18 in the bottom bar of the main or outer frame.

The lugs 17 are slidable downwardly through the openings 18 and as the clamping frame after being closed against the back plate is moved downwardly the inclined slots which converge downwardly toward the back plate cause the clamping frame to move inwardly and engage the contents of the case or frame. By this construction the clamping frame is adapted to adjust itself automatically to the thickness of the contents and it automatically releases the contents when it is moved upwardly.

The clamping frame is locked against upward movement by a gravity latch 20 pivoted at its upper end at 21 by a bolt or other suitable fastening device to the back plate and the transverse bar 6 and provided at its free end with a projecting knob or handle 22 to enable it to be readily swung upwardly out of engagement with the top of the clamping frame to permit the latter to be raised. The clamping frame is provided at the bottom with a projecting knob or handle 23 to enable it to be conveniently moved upwardly and downwardly. The inner clamping frame and the outer or main frame are provided at the bottom with registering openings 2. and 25 adapted to receive a car seal or similar device for sealing the case or holder when desired. This will prevent removal of any of the contents of the case or holder and instead of providing the clamping frame with wire netting, glass or similar material may be used.

Vhat is claimed is A device of the character set forth comprising a main frame having its sides and bottom grooved, a back positioned upon the frame, flanges formed on the sides and bottom edges of the back and being bent to extend in the grooves of the frame, a cross bar secured to the top of the back, said frame having its upper ends of the sides enlarged and slotted upwardly in an inclined plane a top plate carried by the enlarged upper ends of the sides to form a cover, a clamping frame, journals formed 011 the clamping frame and extending through the slots, and lugs projecting downwardly from the clamping frame and extending through the bottom of the main frame to detachably and adjustably secure the clamping frame to the main frame.
