UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MONUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part f Letters Patent NO. 525,026, dated August 28, 1894.`
Application filed October 23, 1893. Serial 110.488.928. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern..-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM OIIAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in thercounty of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Monument, .of which the following is a specitication.
The invention relates to improvements in monuments and grave stones.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of monuments and grave stones, and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive one, which will possess great strength and durability, and which, Will be highly ornamental.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combinationand arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
i in the drawingsz--Figure 1 is a perspective View of a monument or grave stone constructed in accordance with this invention, a
portion of the plastic material being broken away to show the supporting frame. Fig. 2
is a similar view of the supporting frame.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
A represents a suitable supporting basef formed out of any suitable material, and shaped as desired according to the degree of ornamentation required, and upon said supporting base A is mounted an inverted U- shaped frame rim B, having the vertical sides C, and curved or rounded top D, the ver` tical sides C, of said frame rim being adapted to have their lower ends inserted in any suitable manner in the top of the supporting base A. Inside of the U-shaped frame rim B, and located centrally between the side edges thereof is the intermediate perforate binding sheet E.
The perforate binding sheet E, is suitably i secured in position between the opposite sides and top of the'pframe rim B, and is also adapted to have the lower end or edge thereof secured in the top of the' base A. The said perforate binding sheet E, is constructed in any suitable manner, but is preferably formed out of a single sheet of metal perforated with a multiplicity of filling openings F, and havingrintegral threaded sockets or lugs G, located at suitable points thereon to provide for the attachment ot' the inscription plate to of the filling on both sides of said binding sheet to form a substantially solid plastic filling, which is firmly bound in position by the central binding sheet. The said plastic filling H, is not intended to project beyond the outer edges of the frame 'rim B, which latter is of a width equal to the thickness of the plastic body of the monument or grave stone, so as to entirely inclose the side edges of the plastic filling and thereby protect the same from chipping, (ttc.
' Now it will be apparent that a monument or stone constructed as described maybe of any desired configuration other than a substantial U-shape, and in any event it possesses great `strength and durability. The monument or stone is adapted to be ornamented in any suitable manner and is of course intended to receive on one or both sides thereof various emblems and an inscription plate I, which is firmly secured in position by means of suitable securing screws J, passing through perforations therein and engaging the threaded sockets Gr of the perforate binding sheet F., and it will of course be understood, aspreviously stated, that the threaded sockets G of said perforate binding sheets maybe arranged in a position to be accommodated to the position of the emblems and inscription plates which are supported by screws engaging the same, and the monument or stone may be completed by suitable top ornaments, such as the ornament K, shown in the drawings, which may be either integral with or separate from the rounded top of the frame rim B. At this point it may be further noted that the front and back of the monument or stone may be partially or wholly covered with metal in order to strengthen any particular point, and insure a better protection for the plastic 1nateria ICO Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention. Y
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
In a monument or grave stone, the combination with a base; of an inclosing inverted U-shaped frame rim mounted on said base and having a closed upper end, a metallic perforated binding sheet formed of a single piece of metal and arranged centrally within the frame rim between the top and side edges thereof, said binding sheet being provided with Iilling openings and suitably arranged integral threaded sockets, a plastic filling protected thereby, suitable emblems or inscription plates adapted to be placed on the outside of the lling, and fastening screws adapted to pass through perforations in the emblems or inscription plates and lthrough the filling to removably engage the sockets of said binding sheet, substantially as set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afxed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
