sPnoIFIcATIoN fqrming part of Letters Patent No. 654,402, dat-I my 24, 190e. appresso.. filed nach 13,1900. sean No. 8.435. (No man.)
T all whom. t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY N. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian,
. 2 is a view in rear elevation.
county of Lenawee, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Attaching Mail-Boxes to Posts; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which'form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a fastener for attaching mail-boxes to posts; and it consists of the structure, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view inside elevation. Fig. Fig. 3 is a view in cross-section through the fastening device.
Fig. 4 is a view in vertical section there-V through. Fig. 5 is a detail View in perspective of the clamp-holder. Fig. 6 is a detail view in perspective of the clamp. Figs. 7 and 8 illustrate different modifications in the construction of the clamp f to engage the square and the round post. I
More particularly my invention is designed to provide a fastener for the purpose above mentioned, whereby a mailbox may be firmly secured to a post in a very simple, superior, and economical manner.
In carrying out my invention a mail-box of` any desired construction is indicated at a, and a post, which may also be of any desired construction, is indicated at b. The particular post herewith shown is formed of two corresponding parts riveted together, the bodyV or central portion of the post being essentially diamond-shaped in cross-section and having anges through which Athe parts areV ed at their upper and lower extremities with webs, (indicated by the numeral 4,) said webs recessed or shaped to fit the adjacent side of the post.
Inasmuch as I have shown in the drawings herewith a post having the body thereof es# sentially of diamond shape in cross-section the webs 4 4 are shown provided with corre# sponding V-shaped slots 5 5 to receive the adjacent body portion of the post. I do not, however, limit myself to any particular shape of the post nor to any particular shape of said webs 4 4 and their recesses 5 5, inasmuch as it is obvious that if a round post were em# ployed said recesses would be of round form, or if al square post were employed said recesses would be made square. i
The plate l, with the walls 2 3 and end webs or flanges 4 4, form a chamber or housing in which is engaged a clamp f, this clamp, as shown in Fig. 6, being formed with three sides, (indicated by the numerals 6, 7, and 8,) the side walls 7 and 8 being provided with inwardly-projecting fianges 9 9. The shape of this clamping device may `vary, however, if desired, the same being open at its extremities and engaged within the clampholder by means of a bolt or screw g, having a threaded engagement therewith, the bolt being passed through the mail-box from the interior thereof and through the attaching portion l of the clamp-holder and so engaging the clamp. The clamp is removable from the clamp-holder when the bolt or screw g isv disengaged therefrom. To secure the device to the post, the clamp is first removed from the clamp-holder and slipped upon the post. The clamp is then engaged in the clamp-holder and the screw g is engaged with the clamp, thereby tightening the iianges 9 9 upon the adjacent portion of the post and bindingthe post between said ianges and the end anges 4 4 of the holdingdevice.
In a post constructed as shown the clamp is forced downward upon the post below the upper rivets c c, and when tightened in place by the screw it will be obvious that the device cannot be slipped oft' from the post, as the clamping-anges 9 9`not only bind the post against the end flanges 4 4 of the holder when the screw is set, but the projecting heads of the rivets c c effectually prevent IOO the device being slipped ott from the post until the screw is loosened, access to the screw of course being controlled by the lock upon the mail-box.
In Fig. 7 I have shown the clamp f, instead of being three-sided, formed in the shape of a band or four-sidedV clamp to be slipped over the end of the post, in which case, of course, the Webs 4 will be recessed of-corresponding form.
In Fig. 6, Where a round post is shown, the clam p f may be of circular form to be also slipped over the post, and in which case the Webs 4 would be recessed ot' corresponding form. z
What I claim as my invention is l. The combination with a mail-box, of a Y clamp-holder rigidly attached to the mail-box on the outside thereof, a clamping device to engage a post having an adjustable engagement With the clamp-holder, and a bolt passed through the side ofthe mail-box from Within the boX to adjust and secure the clamping device With the clamp-holder.
2. The combination With a mail-box, of an adjustable clamping device to engage a post, a clamp-holder open on its rear side secured to the box on the outside thereof to receive the clamping device, and a tightening device passed through the box from Within to secure and adjust the clamping device with the clamp-holder and bind the post against adjacent portions of the clamp-holder.
3. A fastener for attaching mail-boxes to posts provided With a clamping device constructed with clamping-danges to engage the post, a clamp-holder to receive the clamping device constructed with end webs or iianges to receive the adjacent portion of the post, and means to engage the clamping device With the clamp-holder.
4. A fastener for attaching Inail-boxes to posts provided with a clamping device open at its extremities to be slipped over the end of the post, a clamp-holder to receive the clamping device and the adjacent portion of the post, and means to engage the clamping device with the clamp-holder.
5. A fastener for attaching mail-boxes to posts provided with a clamp open at its extremities to engage a post, a clamp-holder secured to the box provided with sidewalls and end Webs to receive the clamping device, and means to secure the clamping device Within the clampholder.
6. A fastener for attaching mail-boxes to posts provided with a clamping device to engage the post, a clamp-holder to receive the clamping device, and means to engage the clamping device with the clarnp-holder, said clamp -holder provided with end .Webs or Hanges recessed to correspond to the form of the post. v
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence ot' two Witnesses.
HENRY N. KING.
