Description

No- 826,387. PATENTED JULY 17, 1906. A. 0. THOMAS.
MOLD.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 19.1905.
TERS co. IAJHINCTON, c. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 17, 1906.
Application filed June 19,1905. Serial No. 266,004.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUeUsrUs O. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kearney, in the county of Bufialo and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to molds for forming plastic bodies, more especially concrete building-blocks, and has for its particular object to provide an improved collapsible mold for forming plastic bodies which can be readily assembled and dismounted, which when collapsed will occupy little space, and which will be simple in construction and satisfactory and durable in operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mold for forming concrete blocks Which will be so constructed that the lower part of one mold will support the opposite end of an adjacent mold, whereby the molds may be supported in an approximately level position and will occupy less ground-space than would be otherwise possible.
WVith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the preferred form of 'my improved mold assembled for use. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the side plates of the mold. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the pallet or bottom plate. Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of the end plates. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one means of securing the sides of the mold together, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of another means for accomplishing the same purpose.
Like reference-numerals designate similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, 1 designates the pallet or bottom plate of my mold consisting of metal or other rigid material formed, as illustrated, with a flat plate 1 a section l arranged at a right angle thereto, and an extension 1,parallel with the plate 1. This pallet is in longitudinal section substantially in L shape with a continuation extending from the extremity of the base of the L and substantially parallel with the other portion. Oppositelydisposed ears or lugs 2 are carried by the plate l at opposite sides thereof near the transverse portion 1 The mold sides 3 and 4 consist of the approximately rectangular portion 3 and 3 respectively, and the offset extensions 3 and 4, respectively. Each of the side plates is provided with mortises 5 at the end opposite the offset extension for engagement with the tenons 6 of the end plate 7.
At the points indicated the side plates are also provided with mortises 5 5 for engagement with the tenons 8 of a plate 9 of the form shown. The plates 3 and 4 are provided, respectively, with the slot 10 and the hole 11 near one end and below the lower edge of the parts 3* and 4*. This slot and opening are intended to receive the rod 12, having the rigid head 13 and the screwthreaded portion 14, carrying the nut 15 and hand-lever 16.
In assembling the various parts of the mold the pallet and sides and end plates are fitted together as hereinbefore indicated. The rod 12 is then passed through the opening 11 and the slot 10 passing under the pallet 1 between the lug 2 and the transverse portion 1 The nut 15 is then screwed up against the side of the plate 3, and the various parts are thus readily and securely locked in position to receive the plastic material to be shaped therein. Instead of using the rod 12 to secure the parts of the mold together U-shaped clamps 17, having the arms 18 and screw-holes 19 therein, may be employed. These clamps, which are so proportioned that the distance between the arms 18 is equal to the total width of the mold, are slipped over the sides 3 and 4 at each end of the mold and serve to hold the assembled parts together.
While I have shown and described a rod and U-shaped clamps as the means which I may employ to hold the various parts of the mold together, it is obvious that other forms of clamps may be used.
While I have shown the sides only provided with tenons for engagement with mortises in the side plates, it is to be understood that the pallet may be similarly secured to the sides.
Having thus described my invention, what 'zontal extensions of the pallet, an end plate I claim as novel, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A mold comprising a pallet having a vertical portion and two horizontal portions connected by said vertical portion, side walls having downwardly-extending portions at one end thereof, an end wall comprising two vertical portions and a horizontal. portion which connects said vertical portions, said horizontal portion overlying one of the horiand means for clamping said side walls, said end wall and the end plate together, said means comprising a bolt secured in the side walls and lying beneath the upper horizontal portion of the pallet and adjacent the vertical portion thereof.
2. A mold comprising a pallet having a K vertical portion and two horizontal portions connected by said vertical portion, side walls having downwardlyextending portions at 1 one end thereof and having slots formed therein at the juncture of said downwardlyextending portions and the main body of the side walls, an end wall comprising two vertical portions and a horizontal portion which connects said vertical portions, said horizontal portion overlying one of the horizontal extensions of the pallet, an end plate and a bolt for clamping the side walls, the end wall, and the end plate together, said bolt resting in the slotted portions of the side walls and lying beneath the upper horizontal portion of the pallet and adjacent the vertical portion thereof when the parts are in their assembled position.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
