PATENT OFFICE.-
CORNER-CLAMP FOR SHOW-CASES.
SPECIFICATION forming fart of Letters Patent No. 760,805, uatedplvray 24, 1904. Application led March 25, 191. Serial No. 52,804. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern,.-
^ Beit known that I, LEONARD PAULLE, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner-Clamps for Show-Cases, of which the following is a speci'cation.
The invention relates to clamps for showcases; and the object of the invention is to provide means for securing, binding, or clamping together the abutting side and end panels or walls :to exclude dust and hold the panels firmlyin position and prevent racking or twisting of the case.
` A further object is to provide means for securing the top of the plate to the side and end panels at the corners and evenly distribut` ing the strain on the top plate over the surface thereof. Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as herein` afterdescribed, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
, iIn the accompanying drawings, forming' part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front.'v elevation of a show-case with my inventionV applied thereto. Fig.` 2 represents a corner of a case, showing the position of 'the clamp thereon. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on` the line ma of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the other'portion of the clamp. Fig. 5 is a sectional View on'the line y yof Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a show-case, showing the cl-amp device applied` at the top and at points intermediate to the top and bottom. "Fig, 7 is aperspective of the clamp, wherein the top plate attachment is omitted. y Fig. 8 is a detail in section show-4 ing the clamp illustrated in Fig. VTattached to the case. Fig. 9 is a similar view of the interior of the case.
In the drawings, 2 represents the basev of a show-case, 3 and 4 the side and end walls or panels, respectively, and 5 the top plate. This case is constructed in the ordinary or preferred manner, the vertical and horizontal walls being preferably of plate-glass. To
.dered unnecessary.
draw the abutting edges of thepanels 3 and 4 together at the corners of the case, I provide a clamping device consisting of a binderf plate 6, angled in form to lit over a corner of by means of binding screws or bolts 9, having large ornamental heads on the outside and vthreaded Shanks to receive nuts 10. I prefer to place strips of yielding material, suchas rubber cloth 11, `between said binders and the for'securing the top plate to the side and end walls or panels, and I therefore provide the binder 7 with"an/inwardly-turned flange 12, extending within the angle formed vby s'aid binder and provided with an opening that is preferably threaded. The top plate of the case rests upon'said side and 'end panels and has an 'opening coinciding with-said threaded openings, and aretaineror button.l 13, having ;a` shank preferably threaded, passes through 'said top into said threaded openingand holds thev plate securely in place on said panel. This retainer is preferably provided` with a flaring head which extends over theitop plate surface and over the joint of .-tlie, 4panels and serves to distribute the strainon the top plate evenly over its surface. A washer15, ofrub ber or other suitable material, is preferably` provided beneath said head.' In this way the side and end, panels and top of thelcasfe are seourely'bound together at the coiners, all; 85 slipping or-sliding ofthe panels one upon an-` other will be prevented, the' strain on the topy plate will be evenly distributed, the case will be firmly held against racking orV twisting, and the use of a molding or framewill be ren- In Fig.' 6 I have shown a higher or taller style of case than illustrated in Fig. 1 and whereon I prefer to provide clamps near the middle of the case at the corners as` well as at the top of. the same. These clamps that are intermediate panels. It is also desirable to provide means to the top and bottom are substantially the same as those heretofore described, except that the retainer for attaching the clamps to the top plate is omitted and also the flange to which the threaded end of the retainer is anehored or connected. As many of these intermediate clamps may be employed asare found necessary to draw the abutting edges of the panels together and form a close dust-proof joint between them. By arranging a binder on the outside as well as the inside of the case I am able tomore firmly bind the edges of the panels together and form a more rigid corner for the case than has heretofore been possible with the devices in general use. I therefore regard myimproved double clamp attachable at any point on the corners of a case and adapted to bind the walls together as one of the essential features of my invention. While I have shown the top plate of the case secured to the inner binder, it will be understood that means may be provided for attaching said plate tothe outer binder, if preferred.
The binders may be made of any suitable material; but I prefer to stamp them from sheet metal in a suitable size and shape for the purpose designed. Y l
Various modifications of the clamp herein shown and described will suggest themselves to any one skilled in this art. Hence I do not wish to be confined to the particular construction herein shown. i Having thus described my invention, claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a show case, the combination, with abutting side and end walls or panels, of an angled binder or vcorner-plate fitting the corner formed by said abutting panels on the inside, said binder having holes coinciding with similar holes in said panels, bolts passing through and clamping said inner binder and panels together, said binder having an inwardly-turned flange near its upper end projecting within the angle formed thereby and provided with a hole or opening, a top plate resting upon and over- -hanging said panels over and near said flange and having'a hole coinciding lwith'the hole therein, and a retainer or button having a shank passing through the hole in said plate and secured within the hole in said flange thereby yfirmly holding said top plate in position on said panels.
2. In a show-case, the combination, with abutting side and end panels, of binders or corner-plates bent to conform to the angle of juncture of said abutting panels, said binders provided with suitable openings coinciding with openings through said respective panels, bolts whereby said binders are clamped together against said respective end and side panels, on the outside and inside of the joint formed thereby, the inner binder provided with an inwardly-turned flange, and said flange extending within the angle formed by said binder, the said flange provided with a threaded opening, atop plate adapted to rest upon said end and side panels, said top plate provided with an opening coinciding with the threaded opening in said flange, and the retainer or button provided with a threaded shank adapted to pass through said opening in said top plate, to be screwed into said opening in said flange, thereby firmly holding said top plate in position on side and end panels, said retainer or button provided with a flaring head, extending out over the surface of said top plate, ov'er the joint of said end and side panels, and adapted to distribute strain on said top plate over the surface thereof, substantially as described.
3. In a show-case, the combination, with abutting side and end walls or panels, of angled binders or corner-plates fitting the corner formed by said abutting panels on the inside and outside of the case, said binders having holes coinciding with similar holes in said panels, bolts passing thro ugh said holes and clamping said binders together against said panels, said inner binder having aninwardly-turned flange projecting within the angle formed thereby and having a hole or opening, a top plate resting .upon said panels and having a hole coinciding with the hole in said flange,
and a retainer or button having a shank passing through the hole in said plate and secured within the hole in said flange thereby firmly holding said top plate in position on said panels, said retainer having a flaring head extending over the surface of said plate and over the joint between said end and side panels and adapted to distribute the strain on said plate evenly over the surface thereof.
4:. In a show-case, the combination, with abutting side and end walls or panels, of angled binders or corner-plates fitting the corner formed by said abutting panels on the inside and outside of the case, said binders having holes coinciding with similar holes in said panels, bolts passing through said holes and clamping said binders together against said panels, the angle formed by the sides of said outer binder being unobstructed to allow the upper end of said binder to fit the corner of the case below the top thereof, said inner binder having an inwardly-turned flange projecting within the angle formed thereby flush substantially with the upper edges of said panels and having a threaded hole or opening, a top plate resting upon said panels and having a hole coinciding with the hole in said flange, and a retainer or button having a threaded shank passing through the holes in said plate and flange.
5. In a show-case, the combination, with side and end walls or panels and a top plate resting thereon, of a binder fitting into the angle formed by the intersection of said panels secured to said panels and provided with a vertical hole or opening coinciding with a similar hole in said plate, and a retainer or button IOO IIO
