SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,867, dated June 1, 1897.

Application filed September 19, 1896. Serial No. 606,408. (No model.)

To ctZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANTHONY K. FELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Upper Sandusky, in the county of Wyandot and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a novel construction in a button, the object being to provide a button which can be easily covered or the cover renewed without removing the button from the article to which it is fastened.

The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter described and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a crosssection of the button constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a rear face view of the front plate of the button. Fig. 3 is a face view of the rear plate. Fig. 4: is a perspective view showing the manner in which the button is covered. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of a modified construction.

Referring now to said drawings, -1 indicates the front plate, and 2 the rear plate. These plates are suitably secured together at their center, which construction in the instance illustrated consists of a metal staple 3, arranged in the manner shown. The front plate 1 can be of any shape to conform to the style of button, and is shown flat and provided on its rear face with a row of inwardly-projecting teeth 4, which are preferably formed in an inwardly-turn ed marginal flange. The rear plate 2 is provided with a center boss 5 to lie against the rear face of the front plate, and thus hold the rear plate a little distance away from the teeth 4, which the outer edge portion of the rear plate 2 overlaps. The rear plate is further provided with an aperture 6 near its outer edge.

When it is desired to cover a button constructed in this manner, by taking a piece of cloth of requisite size and forcing the edges between the front and rear plates 1 and 2 in the manner shown in Fig. 4 the said cloth will be engaged and securely held by the said teeth at to present a finished and attractive appearance. If it is desired to remove the covering for the purpose of placing a covering of new cloth or design thereon or owing to wear, by

cutting the exposed portion of the cover this- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-' 1. A button consisting of two plates secured together, one of said plates having inwardlyproject-ing teeth and the other plate being provided with an aperture situated inwardly of said teeth, substantially as described.

2. A button consisting of a front plate having inwardly-extending teeth on its rear face, and a rear plate secured to said front plate and provided with an aperture situated inwardly of the teeth of said front plate, substantially as described.

3. A button consisting of a front plate having inwardly-projecting teeth on its rear face, and a rear plate having a central boss secured to the rear of said front plate and havin g an aperture situated inwardly of the teeth of the front plate, substantially as described.

4:. A button consisting of a front plate having inwardly-extending teeth on its rear face, and a rear plate secured to the rear face of said front plate and provided with an aperture situated inwardly of the teeth of said front plate, substantially as described.
