IMPROVEMENT IN SLEEVE-BUTTONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,351, dated May 1, 1877; application filed March 16, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES W. MILLER and IsAAo M. MILLER, of Newark, Essex county, State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Mannfacturing of Sleeve-Buttons; and we hereby declare that the following is a true and exact description of our invention, which will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The object of our invention is to cheapen the manufacture of buttons, and to facilitate the changing of the parts at will, and the putting together and taking apart of the several pieces of which the buttons are made, by which an injured or worn-out part of the button may be replaced by a new one.
Referring to the drawings, Figure I is a face view of our improved sleeve-buttons, representing the parts assembled. Fig. II is a sectional view taken on line 00 m, Fig. I. Fig. III is an inverted view of the rim surrounding the parts. Fig. IV is a top view of the upper disk, connected by a stem to the lower disk. Fig. V is a bottom view of the circular plate.
A is the lower disk; a, the stem connecting the lower disk A and the upper disk B. O is a circular plate, ornamented at the top, at will, by any desired design, monogram, jewels, 8230. This plate is held to the upper disk B by aid of the pins or rivets b b. D is the circular rim or collar, made to cover the edge and part of the top of the disk B, and also the edge and part of the top of the plate 0. The rim or collar D is held to the disk B by aid of rivets or pins 0 c, which are fastened'to the inner side of the rim, and fit into holes in the disk B, on the lower side of which they are bent or clinched, so that the collar or rim and plate are securely held to the disks connected by the stem a.
By this arrangement the disk B may be made of inferior metal, and of less value than the other parts, as this disk is mostly hidden, and is not exposed to wear and tear.
The collar or rim D may be cut out, chiseled, and ornamented in any desirable manner, so that the same, in connection with the circular plate 0, presents the only ornamental parts of the button.
Having thus described our invention, we desire to claim- The collar D, provided with rivets c c, in combination with disk B, stem at, lower disk A, and plate 0, provided with pins 12 b, substantially as described.
