Description
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES SPRUCE, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE SCCVILL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,368, dated April 28, 1874; application lcd March ce, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES SPEUcE, of Wa terbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of. this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1 a view of the buckle complete. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 the parts detached 5 Fig. 6, a central section 5 and in Fig. 7 the three parts as arranged preparatory to closing the sleeve thereon.
, This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of that class of buckles designed especially for fastening or adjusting wearing-apparel, and particularly those which are provided with a loop by which to attach the fixed end of the strap or band; and the invention consists in forming the frame, loop, and tongues from separate pieces, and uniting these three parts by a sleeve, which not only unites the parts but forms the hinge upon which they turn.
A is the frame, a a the tongues, and B the loop. These parts are, preferably, made from wire bent into the form substantially as seen in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, one side of the frame open, as at d, and the base b of the tongues corresponding to the recess d in the frame, so as metal, perforated as' at t' t', corresponding to the tongues a a., and set over the tongues, then closed around ythe base of the tongues, the
open side of the frame, and corresponding side v of the loop; but separate bands may be used at dierent points to secure the parts together. As the points of connection are round, they will turn independent of each other, the sleeve or bands forming the hinge.
Itis not essential that the base ofthe tongues lies in the recess or opening in the side of the frame, as it may lie over one of the parts or between the two. I prefer, however, to arrange the parts as rst described.
I claim as my invention- Theherein-described buckle, consisting ofthe frame A, the tongues a a, formed with the base b and the loop B, the said three parts united and hinged together by a sleeve or bands, c, substantially as specified.
JAMES SPRUCE.
