TICKET-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,344, dated August 31, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, S SPENCER EcoLEsToN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in T icket-Holders, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to ticket-holders for pails or other vessels, and the object is to provide a holder that will completely inclose the tickets and that may be readily opened to display the contents and allow their easy removal therefrom.

The object also is to provide a ticket-holder that may be easily and quickly closed and that may be attached to a pail, pitcher, or other vessel.

It is very undesirable to place milk-tickets or money in the pail, which is usually left out over night, for the reason that the tickets or money, because of handling, are more or less soiled, and, further, because the milkman often secures the tickets or money by placing his hands and soiled gloves in the pail. All this is overcome by my inventionand the tickets or money maybe secured without trouble. The ticket-holder is also useful for holding the bunch of tickets usually left by the milkman periodically. Heretofore these tickets have been placed underneath the pail to prevent them from being blown away or from getting wet, for then the pail contained milk and they could not be placed inside.

To this end my invention consists in the combination, with the means for support, of a back-piece, a holder pivoted to the lower end of the said back-piece, means to retain the holder in an inclined position when open, and a lid pivoted to the upper part of the said back-piece and provided with a lip to engage the holder and retain it in its closed position.

In the drawings hereto annexed and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is the front side elevation of my improved ticketholder. Fig. 2 is the rear side. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the holder when closed. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the same when open, and Fig. 5 shows the ticket-holder reduced in size and supported by and attached to a milk-pail.

Referring specifically to the drawings, a indicates the back of the device, which is flat and rectangular in shape,with sides or flanges a aintegral therewith and bent outward at right angles to the back.

I) is a hook for attaching the device to the pail or other vessel, and it consists of a strip of thin metal, as tin, secured to the back a near its center and having its upper end bent over upon itself to fit over the edge of the pail A.

The device or holder hangs on the outside of the pail and the upper end of the strip is on the inside thereof.

Although the device is held securely in place on the pail, even when a cover for the pail is not provided, a cover will aid in securing the parts together, for the holder cannot be removed without first removing the cover.

Extending horizontally along the top and bottom edges of the back a are hinge members c and (Z. The lower hinge member d is connected to the ticket-holder proper.

The holder consists of a rectangular front side 6, nearly or about the same size as the back a, sides e e, and abottom e, bentinward toward the back at right angles to the front 6. The bottom 6 is provided with a hinge member to match the hinge member d, and the sides 6 e lie inside of the sides a a.

The said holder when closed is held with its side 6 in a vertical position by means of a lip bent downward on the front edge of the cover f.

hen the holder is open, its upper end is dropped so that the side 6 lies in nearly a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 4., but with its rear end lower than the opposite end to prevent the tickets or money from falling or sliding out when the device is opened. The holder is supported in this inclined position by means of small projections g gat the hinge, which are bent to engage the back a. The sides 6 e are beveled at their free ends to engage the lip f of the cover f to raise it when the holder is raised to its vertical position. The cover f lies in a horizontal position eX- cept when raised to open or close the holder. The lip f has a turned-over edge and serves to hold the holder in a vertical position. The rear edge of the cover f is provided with a hinge member to match the hinge member 0. The cover f is shown in its raised position by a dotted line in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

The device is preferably made entirely of tin or other thin metal.

To open the holder, it is only necessary to raise the lid or cover f, when the holder will drop to the position shown in Fig. 4.

To close the holder, lift its free end until said end passes below the lip f of the cover, when the latter will drop and retain the holder in its vertical or closed position, as shown in Fig. 3.

The shape may be changed without departing from my invention, and, if desired, the holder may be permanently secured to the pail by a rivet or solder.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a vesse1,of a backpiece, a hook secured to the back-piece and adapted to engage the edge of the vessel, a holder pivoted to the lower end of the backpiece, means to retain the holder in an inclined position, when open, and a lid pivoted to the upper part of the said back-piece and provided with a lip to engage the holder to retain it in its closed position, substantially as described and shown.

2. The combination with avessel,of a back: piece, a hook secured to the back-piece and adapted to engage the edge of the vessel, flanges on the sides of the back-piece, a holder having its bottom pivoted to the lower edge of the back and having its sides lying between the said flanges, the upper ends of the sides being beveled, a lid pivoted to the upper edge of the back-piece, and having a lip bent down ward to engage the said beveled ends and to retain the holder in a vertical position when closed, and a projection on the bottom of the holder to retain it in an inclined position,

substantially as described and shown.
