Patented June 20, I899.
A.. C. WICKHAM. TAG HOLDING CLIP.
(Application filed Mar. 30, 1899.)
(No Model.)
AMOS O. WICKHAM, OF OARTHAGE, fMISSOURI.
TAG-HOLDING CLlP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,285, dated June 20, 1899.
Application filed March so, 1899- To (tZZ whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMOS O. YVICKHAM, of the city of Carthage, Jasper county, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Box Stanchions and Tag-Holding Clips, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to cigar-box stanchions and tag-holding clips; and it consists of the novel construction, combination,.and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the main body portion of my improved stanchion and tag holding clip before the same is bent into position for use. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the blank out of which the lower portion of the stanchion and clip is formed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the stanchion and clip after the same has been bent into position for use. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken approximately on the line 4 l of Fig. 3. Fig. 5is ahorizontal sectional view taken approximately on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a View in perspective of a price-tag-holding plate used in connection with my improved stanchion and clip. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a cigar-box on which is located the improved stanchion and 'clip.
In the construction of the device as shown the main body portion comprises a rectangular sheet-metal plate 1, from the center of the lower edge of which depends a rectangular plate 2, and integral with and projecting laterally from the sides ofthe upper end of this portion 2 are the ears 3, the same being separated from the body 1 by the slits 4. Integral with and depending from the right-hand end of the right-hand one of the ears 3 is a narrow rectangular plate 5. The lower member of the stanchion and clip comprises the elongated rectangular sheet-metal plate 6,and integral with the upper left-hand edge thereof is the rectangular projection 7. Formed in the lower portion of this plate 6 is the inverted- V-shaped cut 8, and the material of the plate within said cutwhen pushed outwardly forms an upwardly-projecting prong 9.
To bend the portions of the device intoposition required for use, so that they can be Serial No. 711,155. (No model.)
properly connected, the plate 5 is first bent double, the point at which said bend is made being indicated by the dotted line 10, after which said double plate and the rectangular car 3, which carries said plate, are bent rearwardly relative the plates 1 and 2 upon the dotted line 11 until said ear and plate occupy a position at an angle of approximately fortyfive degrees relative the plane occupied by said plates 1 and 2. The double plate 5 is then bent away from the ear 3 upon the dotted line 12 until said doubled plate is in a position at right angles to the plane occupied by the plates 1 and 2, after which the left-hand one of the ears 3 is bent on the dotted line 13 until its outer end engages against the double plate 5, and then the outer end of said ear 3 is bent upon the dotted lines 14 around the upperportion of said doubleplate 5. The
plate 1 is then bent rearwardly, so as to indicate at an angle of approximately forty-five degrees, and the bending of the main portion of the device is complete.
That portion of the device seen in Fig. 2 is bent into position for use as followsz'The portion of the plate 6 below the rectangular extension 7 is bent into the form of the letter S, the bend away from the rectangular extension 7 taking place at the horizontallyarranged dotted line 15, and the upper portion of said plate 6, together with the lateral extension 7, are bent. upon the vertically-arranged dotted lines 16 to form the fiat tube 17, which is adapted to receive the doubled plate 5 of the portion of the device previously described.
The price-tag (seen in Fig. 6)-comprises a rec tangular metal plate 18, having three of its edges bent into hooks 19, which plate is adapted to fit upon the plate 1, and suitable numerals, such as 20, may be printed upon or stencilcd in said plate.
To position my improved stanchion and clip upon a cigar-box, the operator first inserts the doubled plate 5 in the fiat tube 17, after which the lid of the cigarebox is bent downwardly so as to bring it into aplane parallel with the plane occupied by the rear wall of said box, after which the stanchion and clip is engaged upon the top edges of the lid of the box and the rear wall thereof by passing the plate 3 downwardly upon the inside face of the rear Wall of said box, which movement positions the front edge of the fiat tube 17, carrying the doubled plate 5, into a position upon the upper portion of the face of the cigar-box lid, and in so positioning the stanchion and clip the S-slraped portion of the plate 6 occupies a position upon the center of the lid and the prong 9 will engage in said lid and tend to prevent accidental Withdrawal of the stanchion and clip. The up per portion of the S-shaped bend forms a loop through which the finger may be inserted when the cigar-box is removed from the show-case or counter to behanded to a customer.
The price-tag 18, heretofore described, is removably positioned upon the plate 1 and is there displayed in a conspicuous position immediately above the box of cigars.
A device of my improved construction is simple, strong, and durable, holds the cigarbox in a mannerwhich will advantageously display the goods in said box, and said device provides means whereby the box can be very easily lifted in and out of the show-case.
I claim- 1. In a device of the class described, a T- shaped plate, the upper portion of which is bent at an angle relative the lower portion, ears integral with the vertical portion of said plate, which ears are bent rearwardly together, a doubled plate carried by one of said ears, a flat tube for rcceiving'the doubled plate, and an S-shaped plate integral with the lower end of said fiat tube, substantially as specified. p
2. In a device of the class described, the plate 1, the plate 2 integral with said plate 1, the ears 3 integral with the opposite upper edges of the plate 2, which ears are bent together, the doubled plate 5 depending from one of said ears, the S-shaped plate 6, the prong 9 integral with and projecting upwardly from the lower portion of said lastmentioned plate, andthe flat tube 17 integral with the upper end of the S-shaped plate for receiving the doubled plate previously mentioned, substantially as specified. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
