To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. PHILBRIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grocers or other Merchants Call-Signals, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw- 111g. 1

This invention relates to signaling devices, especially adapted for use in private residences to indicate to grocerymen and the like whether or not they are desired.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a signal or call of the type specified which may be readily attached to a window or the like so as to be visible from the street or from the outside, said signal orcall being so constructed that it may be readily removed when desired and when in position on the window being adapted to either display a given signal indicating that a call is to be made, or be folded onto itself so as to obscure the signal, and thereby indicate that a call is not to be made.

In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above various embodimonts of the essential idea involved in the invention may be resorted to, one pr ferred and practical embodiment thereofbeing shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a detail elevation of a portion of a window showing the improved signaling device or call applied thereto and in position to convey a signal. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the signaling device or call taken from the rear. Fig. 4 is a similar View taken from the front.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 and 2 designate the two members of the improved signal or call, the same being preferably formed of sheet metal and being of a rectangular shape, the member 1 being hereinafter designated as the stationary member and the member 2 being designated as the movable member.

The number 1 at its upper edge and on the front face thereof is provided with resilient gripping arms 3 and 4:, said arms being preferably formed of one piece of thm sheet metal, the arm 3 being arranged in a straight plane and being adapted to engage with the top surface of the midrail of a sash frame. The lower arm 4 is arranged in a substantially step formation to conform to the usual contour of the bottom surface of a inidrail. Said arms are of a substantially U -shape, and have their bend riveted or otherwise permanently secured to the inner corner of the upper edge of the member, as indicated at 5. The lower corner of the member 1, preferably on the same longitudinal edge to which the grippin arms 3 and 5 are fastened, is transverse y slitted of the adjuncts to the member 1 is so that the gripping arms and the spring arm 6 are on the same side and adjacent to the same longitudii'ial edge, while the stop 7 is on the opposite side and adjacent to the opposite longitudinal edge.

The movable member 2 has its longitudinal edges bent over to form guiding and holding channels 8 and 9, one of said channels being cut-away at one end as indicated at 10 to permit access to be had to the card or other signal A held between said channels so that the same may be readily removed or adjusted, as desired. The card may be of any suitable or convenient type provided with a given signal such as Out to indicate that the occupants of the residence are not in, but as the card is readily removable, it may be withdrawn and reversed so as to display a signal such as In to indicate that a call is to be made. The member 2 has one end pivotally connected to the lower or free end of the member 1 as indicated at 11, upon the side of said member 1 adjacent to the stop 7 so that the piw tal movements of the member 2 will be limited thereby. The free end of the member 2 upon the side opposite to the cut-away portion 10 of one of the channels. is provided with an outstanding lateral projection 12 forming a finger-hold to facilitate the manipulations of the member 2 relative to the member 1.

It will be understood from the foregoing description that all parts of the member 1 excepting the gripping arms may be formed of a single piece of'material, the arrange ment being such that they may be formed by a single operation of a suitable machine, and the part or member 2 is similarly formed of a single piece of material, thus greatly cheapeningthe initial cost of the device.

The operation is as follows :The members l and 2 being pivoted together, the gripping arms of the member 1 are engaged with the upper rail of the sash, and if a call is desired, the member 2 is turned to rightan les to the member 1, in which position its fastened end will contact with the stop 7, as shown in Fig. 3. If a call is not desired, the member 2 is folded onto the member 1, in which position its end edge which is pivoted to the member 1 will rest upon the stop 7, and both members will oe held in a nested position, with the signal card obscured.

I claim as my invention 1. A signaling device comprising a member provided with resilient gripping arms at one end adapted for engagement with a win dow or the like, a stop carried by the lower end thereof, a spring arm also projecting from the lower end and adapted to contact with a window,.a second member having one end pivoted to the lower end of the first member, said second member being limited in its movement by said stop, and a signal carried by said second member.

2. A signaling device comprising a member provided with resilient gripping arms at one end adapted for engagement with a window or the like, a lateral stop carried by one side of the lower end of the said member, a spring arm projecting from the same side of the member as the gripping arms and adapted to hold the member in spaced relation to a window or the like, and a second member pivoted at one end to the lower end of the first member and provided with a signal and a finger-hold for manipulating the same, said second member being limited in its movement by the stop carried by the first member.

3. A signaling device comprising a stationary member having gripping arms for engagement with the upper and lower surfaces of a window rail and also provided with a spring arm for holding the same spaced from a window and with a laterally extending stop, and a second member pivoted to the stationary member adjacent to said stop and provided with signal holding channels and also with an outstanding handle for facilitating the movements of the same.

4. A signaling device comprising a stationary member provided at one end with an integral oppositely disposed stop and spacing arm, gripping arms carried by the other end of said member for detachable engagement with a window sash, a movable member pivoted to the stationary member adjacent to the stop and having its longitudinal edges formed with guiding channels one of which is cut-away at one end whereby a signal may be placed within or removed from said channels, and a laterally extending finger hold carried by the free end of the movable member, said finger hold being integral with the movable member.
