Application filed March 11, 1922.
T0 all whom may concern -Be it known that I, BoLnsLaw V. Cmn- NEGKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drinking- Glass Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders for drinking glasses and containers of a similar nature, and has as its object the provision of a holder which will firmly support a glass in inverted or up-side-down position and will contact with but a limited portion of the glass.
Another object of the invention is to provide a holder which, by reason of its simple construction, may be readily and cheaply manufactured, and which will, at the same time, be sightly and ornamental.
Other objects of the invention have to do with the more detailed features of construction, and will be apparent from a reading of the following description of the illustrative embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. l is a front elevational view of a holder showing a glass in dotted lines,
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view, and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings for a more detailed description, l0 indicates a body portion which, preferably, is formed of metal, and is provided with suitable means whereby the holder may be secured to a support. In the present instance, the body portion has ears 11 which,as shown in Fig. 2, are substantially Hat and are provided with openings 12 through which some securing means, such as nails or screws, may be passed. The lower end of the body portion has a downwardly and upwardly extending spring {inger 13 which is longitudinally curved, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, so as to limit the area over which the finger contacts with the wall of the container. This finger is intended to fit within a glass or other article of a similar nature, and to clamp the glass in position upon the holder.
The body portion of the holder should be provided with. means cooperating with the spring finger and engaging the outer wall of the container in order to hold the latter in proper position and against movement. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be noted that the Specification of Letters atent.
rarement July ii, resa.
Serial No. 542,967.
body portion has a central longitudinally extending depression let provided with side walls l5 which are inclined so as to extend substantially tangential to the curved wall of a tumbler. By reason of the inclination of the walls l5 the tumbler will contact with each wall along substantially but a single line extending longitudinally of the tumbler. The depression 14 affords a seat for the glass and the two walls l5 cooperate with the spring finger to prevent lateral movement of the glass, the finger clamping the glass in its seat. The entire device may be suitably stamped or struck up from a single piece of metal, and, as shown in the drawings, may be of integral or one-piece construction.
By reason of the fact that the holder is adapted to maintain a glass in inverted position, any liquid which may remain in the glass after it is washed or after use will be permitted to drip therefrom, and, moreover, the inverted position prevents dirt and dust from settling in the container.
By referring to Fig. 3 it will be noted that the bottom of the depression la issubstantially on a line with and in the same plane as the ears ll. By reason of this construction the holder may be secured to a wall and the tumbler will be held slightly spaced from the wall, thereby eliminating danger of marring or disfiguring the wall or other support, since'the tangential relation of the two sides of the seat to the tumbler prevents the latter from being pressed to the bottom of the seat by the finger i3.
It should be understood that the detailed showing and description is given merely for the purpose of clearly explaining the invention, and is in no sense restrictive thereof, since numerous modifications may be made in the illustrated and described embodiment of the invention without departing from the scope of the invention, which is more definitely set forth in the following claims.
I claim:
l. A holder for containers of the class described comprising a body portion having means permitting the holder to be secured to a support, a spring finger on said body portion adapted to project into a container and to clamp the wall of the container, said body portion being transversely curved to form a depression in alignment with said finger affording a seat for a portion of the container, the nger clamping the container in said to clamp the Wall of the container, said body portion being transversely Curved to form a depression in alignment With said finger affording a seat for the container through a substantial portion of its length, the nger clamping the container in said Seat, said depression being formed so as to engage the lcontainer along but tvvo spaced lines and said finger being longitudinally curved so as to limit the area oi Contact between the finger and the container Wall.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand'.
