r In Japan July6, 1939' t Claims. (01. 220-37) An object of this invention is to provide a combined swing hinge and joint by whicha closure can be mounted in'a manner to be supported in various open positions for different utilitarian purposes.

Another object of the invention is to provide a swing hinge and joint by which a closure can be operatively and detachably connected to a receptacle or other support in such manner that the closure can be supported therefrom in an inclined open position to drain accumulated moisture from the closure into the receptacle as its contents, such as food, are being cooked, the closure also being supportable in a generally horizontal position atone side of the receptacle to provide a. rest for culinary utensils, and being suspendable vertically at one side of the receptacle for convenient pouring or drinking of the contents.

With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the combinations and arrangements of elements as set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring specifically to the drawings and particularly to Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, this form of the invention comprises a round receptacle R such as a metal cooking vessel, having a closure or cover 0, and operatively and detachably connected to the receptacle by means of a mounting element M co-actable with a hinge member H.

The element M comprises a semi-circular wire bail I0, the ends of which are in-turned to form trunnions H pivotally mounted in diametrically opposed openings'in the receptacle in juxtaposition to its lip l2. 1

The hinge member H is constructed from sheet metal and is of generally ueform with one branch 13 secured by rivets M to the cover. The bight portion of the member H loosely engages the bail it between right and lefthand stop elements l5 having lateral detents It spaced sufficiently to prevent hinging movement of the member H on the bail and adapted to selectively co-act with the member to support the cover in the upwardly and outwardly inclined position shown at a in full lines in Figure 1 wherein the cover is clear of the mouth of the receptacle, To support the cover in this position, the cover is tilted laterally on the bail, as shown in Figure 3, to one side or the other so that one detent or the other will be disposed in the path of downward hinging movement of the cover on the bail. Any moisture accumulating on the inside of the cover when in this position will" drain into the receptacle.

The other branch E8 of the member H is curved outwardly to a location for engagement with the side wall of the receptacle when the member H is disengaged from the detents l6 and the cover is swung downwardly about the bail as an axis, to the substantially horizontal position shown at b in broken, lines in Figure 1, wherein the cover is inverted and provides a convenient support or rest for spoons, knives or forks which are used on the contents of the receptacle during or after the cooking Operation.

Projecting from the inner side of the cover at a central location thereon is a hook 20 adapted to co-act with the bail ID in supporting the cover from the receptacle lip 12 in'the downwardly and outwardly inclined position shown at c in broken lines in Figure 1. The hook 28 can be attached to a chain 2| or other flexible member leading from a tray or strainer 22in the receptacle, so as 'to raise and lower'the tray according as the cover ure 1, so as to be disposed at the side of: the receptacle and permit the contents of the latter to be poured therefrom without interference by the cover, or the contents can be conveniently drunk fromthe receptacle with the cover-in this position; a

At diametrically opposed places at an angular distance of ninety degrees from the hinge member H are other hooks 25 which are also adapted to co-act with flexible members such as the chain 2| in operatively connecting the cover to a tray 22 to raise and lower the latter as aforestated. By the provision of the U-shaped hinge member H the cover can be readily detached from the bail for cleaning purposes and for handling of the receptacle independently of the cover.

By means of a hinge member Hf similar to the hing member H, the cover ishinged to a mounting element MT in the form of a bail [0a haying suitable trunnions Ila entering diametrically opposed openings in the body 32 to pivotally connect the bail to the receptacle.

The bail lllc co-acts with the hinge member H to enable the cover C" to be suspended at one side of the cover in an unobstructing position for dispensing of the contentsthrough the perforations 33'5 and. to be readily. detached from the receptacle. In the closed position of the cover, the pins 37 seal the openings 36 to prevent contamination of the contents.

Reference will now be had to Figure 8, which illustrates arectangularreceptacle' R2 to which is hingedly connected a closure CZby means of a mounting element M2 functioning in the manner of the balls '10 andfllla and composed of links 'lflb pivotally connected at '40 to the receptacle at locations medially between opposite sides thereof and in juxtaposition to the open side thereof. The other ends of the links are pivotally connected at 4| to the cover C2 at locations adjacent one edge thereof. Along a medial line, hooks 2% project from the inner side of the cover and are adapted to be hooked over the inner edge of the receptacle to support the cover in the inclined open position shown in Figure 8. Chains Zlb can be connected to these hooks, and trained over hooks 42 on the inside of the receptacle, for connection to a tray or other carrier 43 in the receptacle so as to raise or lower the tray according as the cover is opened or closed, whereby to render the contents conveniently accessible when the cover is opened.

What is claimed is:

1. In combination, a receptacle; a cover for the receptacle; a mounting element pivotally connected to the receptacle; means hingedly connecting the cover adjacent the perimeter thereof, to said mounting element at a location sufiiciently spaced from the pivotal connection of the element to the receptacle that the cover can be swung about the pivotal and hinged connections to occupy various positions to one side or the other of the receptacle; and means on the first means co-actable with the receptacle to support the cover in an inverted and substantially horizontal position at one side of the receptacle for the support of articles on the cover.

2. In combination, a receptacle; 2. cover for the receptacle; a mounting element pivotally connected to the receptacle; means hingedly connecting the cover adjacent the perimeter thereof, to said mounting element at a location sufficiently spaced from the pivotal connection of the element to the receptacle that the cover can be swung about the pivotal and hinged connections to occupy various positions to one side or the other of the receptacle; and means on the cover co-actable with the rim portion of the receptacle to; support the cover in an outwardly and downwardly inclined position relatively to the receptacle with a portionof the cover overlying the receptacle for access to the contents of the latter.

3. In combination, a receptacle; a cover for the receptacle; a mounting element pivotally connected to' the receptacle; means hingedly connecting the cover adjacent the perimeter thereof, to said mounting element at a location sufficiently spaced from the pivotal connection of the element to the receptacle that the cover can be swung about the pivotal and hinged connec tions to occupy various positions to one side or the other of the receptacle; means on the cover co-actable with the rim portion of the receptacle to support the cover in an outwardly and downwardly inclinedv position relatively to the receptacle with a portion of the cover overlying the receptacle for access to the contents of the latter; a tray in the receptacle; and means coactable with the last means and tray by which the latter is raised or lowered in the receptacle according as the cover is opened or closed.

4. In combination, a receptacle; a cover for the receptacle; a mounting element pivotally connected to the receptacle; means hingedly connecting the cover adjacent the perimeter thereof, to said mounting element at a location sufilciently spaced irom the pivotal connection of the element to the receptacle that the cover can be swung about the pivotal and hinged connections to occupy various positions to one side or the other of the receptacle; and a hook member projecting from the inner side of the cover substantially medially thereof, adapted to engage the rim portion of the receptacle for co-action with the mounting element in supporting the cover in an outwardly and downwardly inclined position.

5. In combination, a receptacle; a cover for the receptacle; a bail pivotally mounted on the receptacle; a generally U shaped hinge member secured to the cover at the edge thereof and detachably connected to the bail to provide a hinge joint between the two for co-action in enabling the cover to be swung about the hinge joint and pivotal mounting. to occupy various positions to one side'or the other of the receptacle; spaced detents. on the bail. between which the hinge member canpass, and being selectably co-actable with the hingemember to support the cover in an upwardly and outwardly inclined position to one side andabove the receptacle; and means on the hinge member co-actable with the receptacle to support the cover in an inverted and substantially horizontal position to one side of the receptaclewhen the cover is moved for the hinge member to pass between said detents.
