Appii'cation filed March "My invention relates tola :se'r'vicebin for *vendible commodities-and has for its principal object to provide a device of thatcharacter for usein grocerystores for displaying 6 commodities such as crackers and. cakes,
driedfru'its'or other merchandise-within a bin, whereby the" merchandise may be .kept clean andsanitary, butto which access may *be readilyhad-for 'delivery to customers.
In accemplishing't-his and other objects of the invention I have provided improveddetails of structure described hereinafter, and '-illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
. I "gral. 'With the bottom "and preferably Bx- Fig. '1is a' perspective view of a racket.

lation'as to receive webs on the sides of the bins as hereinafter described. Fixed to the Fig-Q'is'a vertical, longitudinalsection of Referring more in detail to the drawings, 1 designates a rack consisting of the end 2a, 1925.: smear-inn97,578.
rails 6 are corresponding rails 8 havingtheir perpendlcularxflanges at the rear end fprorv dedwithslots 10 in alignment with the slots 7 in the front rails 6; Theslots 7 f'and 10 are arranged in pairs to receive the webs on the sides of the binsand the pairsloc'ated 2-111 such close relation throughoutthelwidth of the rack as .to conservefspace" but avoid interference when a number of binsiare located side by side within the. rack. The-bins used in connection with'thel ra'k each; ,comprises a box 1-1 5' formed of sheet? metal wi'th a.bottom ,12, a frontwallf13finteassembled. with the bottom ,12 and side wane 15which maybe connected with thebottom,
but are projected below and forwardly oflthe" 7 .bottom and front-walls to form the webs 16 and 17, . havingnotches 18 and 19 for receiv ing the free edges of the perpendicular rail flanges when the bin is locatedlon therack, the notched portions of the webs seating .within' the notched portions of, the rail flanges to anchor the bins in support on the rails and prevent transverse displacement of the bins from their set'position inthe rack. The upper edges ofthe sides 15 are turned .laterally and backlapped to form the 'stiflened rails 20 for slidablysupporting a lid or cover, and the upper ends .of the front webs 17 are downset" as at 21 to avoid sharp corners and provide space for, a handle member on the front of the lid or cover.
3 The lid or cover comprises channelledv side rails 22 and 23 and a channelled rear rail- 24:,each composed of a single piece. of sheet metal bent upon itself to form the channel and with. one free edge spaced from the other to provide'a throat 25 for receiving the edge of a glass panel 26. The panel 26 is of less length than the cover frame, so that'theside rails at the open end of the frame project forwardly beyond the end of the glass. j
Fitted within the open end of the frame is a filler plate 27, preferably composed of sheet metal having an offset 2801 a depth to form a snug fit of the platewithin the channelslof the side rails- 22' and 23. Overlying the rails 22 and 23 is a handleplate 30 having an underlapped forward edge 31 bearing against the top faces of the side rains" outwardly of the backlapped lip by screws 33. The plate 30 is extended downwardly and in a curl at its forward-endto provide a keeper 34 thatnormally lies along the inclined upper edges '21 of the' front web -17 of the sides of the box t'ohold the lid or cover against accidental opening movement. The backwall 14s of the box is turned rearwardly' at its upper edge'to' form akeeper lip 35 and the rear war-11124 of the'box lidor cover is provided with a downwardly and forwardly turned hook bar 36 which" fits over thekeeperi when the lidorcover is closed to form este m keeper forthe lid or cover which will limit. downward andforfward movement thereof on the" box and retain ,the thereto.

readily observable. The bins are then filled with merchandise suitable to be displayed 7 I and closed with their covers or'lids and then lifted into the rack with thenotched por- 'tions of the rack .r'ails a'nd' thefbox webs nesting to anchor the bins in the rack.
" 'With the bins in place their contents are protected from dust, dirt and"verm in,gal-
' it to ,pass over the top of the him He then though readily observable so, that the device constitutes a display for stimulating sales of the merchandise. 1 y I f When a sale is'to be made the clerk'opens the bin containing the particular merchandise desired lifting upwardly on the rolled handle '34, freeing the roll. to permit pushes the 'lid longitudinally tdprovide the necessary openingfor accessto the bin, and when the lid is released the roll presses against the top rails of the lid and is held in place by its own tension. After the sale a manual operation. By .backsetting the is made the lid is pulled back until the handle roll springs over the end of the box and assumes its locking relation thereof.
Consequently, the contents of the bin are protected at all times although access may be readily had thereto without completely removing the lid from the bin or latching the lid open by a hook or the like requiring glass panel from the front of the bin and filling the front of the 7 cover frame with" the eglate 27, any danger of the operators hand eing cut by contact with the edge of the glass is obviated and a suitable clamp also provided for the panels.
WVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A bin of the character described, comprisinga container element and a cover slidably mounted on the container element and having a. flexible handle in frictional contact with the container element when the cover is inopen position to maintain position of the cover relative to the container element.

A bin of the character described, comprising a container element and a cover, the container element having laterally directed top rails, a back turned keeper rail on. the cover in free spaced relation with the containerrails to permit lifting of the cover relative to the container anda flexible keeper,
on the cover adapted for variable frictional contact with the container to hold the cover in set position relative to the container:
3. In a-bin of the character'described, a
container having laterally turned edge=;
*flanges at its top,=.a cover comprising side rails having'panel throats above the icontainer rails and a 'keepernrail on (the cover below the container rails for affordinglimited vertical movement of-the coverin'an- 1 choredrelation tothe container and a panel having its edges locatedin said throats to 4. In a bin of the character-described, a
container, a cover for the'containercompris-i bent upon itself and'shaped to channelformation, the free edges of the strip being spaced to form a throat, a panel having its edges located within the throats of'the cover rails, theinner free edge of each rail being cut away at the frontTof 'the-cover, a filler block located within the channelsof the side rails of the cover and having anfoffset lip overlying the'free edge ofthe panel, and a handle member comprising a plate overlying the cover rails and secured to the filler late. I p 6. A bin of the character described comprising a' container having outturned-side and end rails at its top, a cover comprising U-shaped channel rails into which the container rails are projected to anchor the cover to the container, the cover rails having spaced, parallel edges forming panel throats, a panel located in said throats and a fiexible han'dle at one end of the-cover member adapted for variable frictional contact with the container to hold the cover in set position relative to the container.
7. A bin comprieing a container element and a cover slidabiy mounted on the con- 1 tainer element, said container element and cover having means comprising a flange on the container and a resilient member on the HENRY MUENZENMAYER.
