SHOW CASE.
Application mea April s,
This invention relates to improvements in showcases, and more particularly to showcases for supporting and displaying packages or cartons of cakes `,and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved showcase which will be so cony structed as to support a plurality of cartons in such a manner that the lowering of a shelf will automatically raise a lid so that access may be had to the interior of the carton.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved showcase which will be provided with a plurality of carton-receiving cases, which will be fixedly secured in suitable racks in such a manner as to display goods or edibles within the cartons positioned within said cases.
A further object of the invention is to provide a showcase construction which will support and display a plurality of cartons, and other contents, and furthermore the provision of a pivoting shelf which will be connected to cover or lid for each of said cartons so'that when the shelt` is lowered, the lid will be raised and the lid being heavier will close automaticallyrwhen no weight is on Athe shelf. e
A still further object of the invention is to provide an im roved showcase of the character describe which will be highly eicient in use and quite inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects will appear tion proceeds.

for locking a case in the case-receiving rack, and

Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings designate corresponding parts.
The showcase comprises a form construction consisting of four corner posts 1, iwhich are connected together at their opposite ends by means of the spaced end strips 2. A shelf 3 extends transversely from side to side ot. the case and serves to more rigidly brace the same.
A pluralitv of case-supporting racks are positioned between the opposite sides of the showcase, and are formed of two triangular shaped ends 4 which are connected together on two of their adjacent sides by means of the strips 5. Slots 6 are formed in the upper and lower portions of the triangular' shaped ends 4 and are adapted to receive supporting bolts 7.
The rack-s comprising the triangular shaped portions 4 and connecting the strips 5 are adapted to receive and support a plu- These cases 8 are formed with backs 9, bottoms 10, front shelves 11, which are hinged to the bottoms 10, sides 12 and hinged transparent covers 13. A downwardly extending binding strip or band 14 is hinged at 15 at the opposite sides of the caseand is cut on slantingly at `its: rear ends, and is adapted to be raised as best illustrated in Figure 6 of the drawings when it is desired to place a carton within the case, but it they are of half the usual size, a filler 16 may beinserted first within the case to hold the car tons 17 at the proper distance from the bottom of the case.
Each of the cases has positioned on its back, a wedge-receiving socket 18 which is adapted to extend between adjoining strips 5 on the case-receiving racks, and when said cases are in position, they are held securely by inserting the wedge 19 through the socket 18. An element 2O of a strap hinge is positioned at one or both sides of each case and is attached to each shelf 11. The second element,- 21 ot the hinge is pivoted to the hinged cover 13 and has a pivoted connection at a point adjacent the outer or rear end of the element 20 as at 22. A bell or gong 23 is pivotedv at 24 on a side of each case and is engaged hy the free end of the element 2O whenever the front shelf or cover is moved from its normal position.
`The shelves ll, as hefore mentioned are hingedly connected to the cases, and are provided with spring tensioning means 40, which serves to assist in closing the lid and holding it closed.
A heveled linger 'll is end of each of the shelves vll. to seat within a slot or noti-h of the cover 13, when the cover are hoth closed. v
The mode of operation of my improved showcase is as follows: Assuming that a carton is in position within each case, the goods within said cartons may readily he seen through the transparent tops of the eases. When a customer has decided upon the goods or edibles he intends to purchase, the salesman will grasp the handle 25 on the shelf 11, and pull down same, which action will cause the knife hinge to open. first sounding the gong 23 and then lifting` the cover 13. The shelf 11 will then extend in a suhstantially horizontal position and may support the bag or container into which the goods will be placed. A shelf supporting rail or yoke 26 1s pivoted at 27 and extends the full width across the showcase and is adapted to contact with pins 28 t0 hold the same in position. The pins 28 may of course be n- ]'uovided at the outer and is adapted fil-Q in the rim and shelf sorted in any desired adjusted position. The shelves 11, when in lowered or horizontal position will he supported upon the rail or yoke 2G, thereby taking any undue strain from the cases. After the desired amount of the goods or edi'hles have heen removed from the cartons, the covers may he lowered to their normal position, which movement will simultaneously close the shelves due to gravity, and the covers being heavier than the shelves.
The gong 23 will serve to notify the salesman in the event that an unauthorized person opens the case. l
Many minor changes in detail of deseription may he resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
After thus describing my invention what l claim as new, and desire to secure hy Letters latent of the United States, is:
In a show case, having a supporting stand, a plurality of ease supporting'racks adjustahly supported thereby, a plurality of earton receiving cases detachably secured in said racks, pivoted interconnected tops and shelves attaehed to each of said cases, a pivoted band attached to the top of each of said cases and positioned below said main tops or covers, and means for supporting sald shelf when in lowered position to limit the movements thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
