G. R. TAXIS.
PICTURE FRAME HANGER.
No. 340,165. Patented Apr. 20, 1886.
I/VVENTOR kzad WITNESSES:
A TTOR/VEY PATENT rrrea' GIDEON R. TAXIS, OF MORRIS, ILLINOIS.-
PICTURE-FRAME HANGER.
KJILEQIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 340,165, datcd Apri120,l 88 6.
Application tiled September 28, 1885. Serial No. 178,490. (No model.)
T0 to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GIDEON R. TAXIS, of Morris, in the county of Grundy and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Frame Hangers; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert'ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Heretofore it has been customary to hang mirrors, picture-frames, framed maps, &c., by means of wire and nails, or instead of nails an S-shaped hook, which was attached to a suitable molding affixed to the wall.
The object of'my invention is to dispense with all the appliances heretofore used, and this I accomplish by means of a simple device consisting of two parts, one of which is secured to the back of the picture and the other to the wall in register therewith.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my invention, showingits application. Fig. 2 shows side views of the two parts of my invention. Fig. 3 shows plan views of the same. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 5 is a modification, and Fig. 6 shows a modification of one part thereof.
Reference being had to the drawings, A represents a screw-plate, which is fastened to the back of a picture-frame. Projecting to the rear from this plate is a segmental arm, B, the curvature of which is downward and the under edge of which is provided with serrations b b.
0 represents a screw-plate, which it is designed to secure to the wall back of said picture-frame, and in register with plate A. Projecting toward said picture-frame from said plate 0 is a segmental arm, D, which is provided with a longitudinal slot, d. The length of the upper opening of the slot is less than the under opening thereof., The upper edge of the.
web or bridge 0 uniting the parts of arm D, separated by slot (1, is sharpened, as shown in Fig. 4.
The operation of my invention is as follows, viz: After securing the plates A and G in the positions before stated to hang the picture the point or outer extremity of arm is passed downwardly through slot d sufficiently far for the sharp web cto enter one of the serrations b in the under edge of said arm B. The hold on the picture is then released. and as the same oscillates downward until its lower edge strikes the wall the extremity of said arm B will bear upward against the under surface of arm D. The arm B, thus held by reason of its extremity bearing upward against the under surface of arm D, and the sharp edge 0 entering and pressing upward against one of the serrations b of arm B, securely locks the same and prevents its withdrawal withoutthe picture being oscillated upward;
Two sets of the device may be used to hang a pictureframe to the wall, but I prefer to use but one set, and that I locate about the longitudinal center of the picture, a suitable distance above the lower edge thereof.
Then two sets are used for each picture, the arms projecting from plates A and O are rigid and permanent in position, but when one set only is used arm B is provided with a cylindrical shank, c, which passes through plates A and throughaconcavo-convex diskspring, E, whereupon its end is swaged to form a head to prevent its withdrawal and securely hold together the spring E and plate A. This latter construction of devices which, as stated, is preferably adopted when but one set of my improved devices is used permits the oscillation of the picture-frame and holds the same at any angle desired.
In Fig. 5 is shown a modification of my invention. In this, arm B is bifurcated, and arm D is made narrower at a point, X, to form shoulders f, and it is provided with a suitable head, G, on its extremity, the width of which is greater than the divisions of bifurcated arm B. In use the divisions ofarin B pass on either side of arm D between shoulders F and head G thereof sufficiently far so that when the picture-frame to which plate A is attached oscillates downward the extremities of arm B will bear upward against the shoulders f of arm B, and so that head G will bear upward against the under surface of arm B.
I am aware that various modifications may be made of my invention; but any such using segmental arms in conjunction with screw:
plates secured respectively to the back of the picture-frame and to the wall I claim as coming within the scope of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The plate A, having projecting therefrom a segmental arm, in combination with a screw-plate, 0, having a segmental arm projecting therefrom in direction of said plate A.
2. The combination, with plate A and segmental arm B, of plate 0, and segmental arm 1). having a longitudinal vertical slot therein.
3. The combination, with plate A'and segmental arm B, provided with serrations b on its under edge, of plate G, segmental arm 1), having a longitudinal vertical slot, d, and a web, 0, the upper edge of which is sharpened.
IVitnesses:
J AMES H. CoYNE, FRANK D. THOMASON.
