Description

E. KAPLAN. HANGER FOR PICTURES AND THE LIKE.
. APPLICATION FILED JAN-24. I917- Lfl lfil a fnzzenhw" ifgra/ mnqy/s TIN @TATEg PAENT EZRA KAPLAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR I0 NATIONAL ART NOVELTY COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A
HANGER FOR PICTURES AND THE LIKE.
CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
n... warm a I n W m ll 1 Specification of Letters Patent. p flfigl 7 Application filed January 24, 1917. Serial N 0. 144,192.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA KAPLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hangers for Pictures and the like, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to hangers such as are employed for hanging small pictures, calendars and the like. The object of the invention is to provide improved and si1nplified means for hanging small picture frames and the like.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention.
Figure l is an elevational view on an en larged scale of the metal hanger;
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the rear of the card or mounting to which the hanger is attached;
Fig. 3 is a front view of the card or mounting with the hanger attached; and
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view showing the manner of attaching the hanger to the mounting card or board.
In preparing small pictures, calendars and the like which are adapted to be hung upon a supporting nail or the like, it is desirable to provide a hanger which may be easily applied to the article to be hung which will be permanent when in place and which will be relatively inexpensive to manufacture and to apply.
I provide a sheet metal stamping of the form shown in Fig. 1 having an eye portion 1 attached to a shank portion 2, this shank portion having a tongue or spear 3 struck or slitted out of the main shank portion The manner of forming the tongue 3 is such that the base of the tongue 3 lies at the base of the shank 2, and both the tongue and the shank point in the same direction. At the junction of the shank portion with the eye of the hanger I provide a pair of shoulders 4. for preventing movement of the hanger after the same is in place on the mounting card.
The mounting card or back 5 is provided at a suitable point preferably near its upper end with a slot 6 of substantially the width of the shank portion 2. The hanger is applied to the mounting card or board 5 by pushing the shank 2 together with the tongue or spear 3 through the slot until the shoulders a rest against the back surface of the mounting card. The main part of the shank 2 is then bent upward, as is shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and the tongue or spear 3 is bent down. The mounting card 5 is then covered with a suitable card, picture or the like, as is shown in dotted lines at 7 and a binding or frame 8 may be applied to the edges to hold these parts in place.
It is apparent that the hanger is solidly secured in place as the same can not pull outward without straightening the parts 2 and 3 and cannot be pushed inward because of the shoulders 4. Movement upward is prevented by the shank 2 which supports the weight of the mounting card 5 and attached parts and movement downward is impossible because of the tongue or spear 3. I wish to call particular attention to the fact that the main part of the shank 2 is bent upwardly and the tongue or spear 3 being bent downwardly. Thus, not only is the material placed to the best advantage with regard to strength, but an important advantage is secured in attaching the device. It would be very diflicult to bend the tongue or spear 3 upwardly without bending the main. shank 2, but it is relatively very easy to bend the main shank 2 upward as is shown without touching the spear 3 and thus attachment of the hanger may be quickly and easily made.
I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown and described.
I claim:
1. A hanger comprising a Hat piece of sheet metal having an open eye member at one end, a flat shank member of substantially uniform width for the major part of its length integral with the eye member and forming the opposite end, shoulders extending laterally from the hanger at the upper end of the shank member, said shoulders and eye member being adapted to lie on one side of a card and a tongue pointing in the same direction as the shank member, said tongue being struck out of the shank member by a U-shaped cut, the base of the tongue lying substantially at the base of the shank, said tongue and shank being adapted to be passed through a slot in the card to the opposite side and be bent in different directions.
2. In a device of the class described, an eye portion and a shank portion having a tongue struck up from said shank portion, the base of the tongue lying at the base of the shank, said tongue and shank extending in the same direction, said shank portion being adapted to be bent back substantially parallel with and overlying the eye portion with said tongue extending downward substantially in line with the eye portion, said eye portion being adapted to lie on one side of the card, the shank and tongue portion being adapted to lie on the other side.
3. A hanger comprising an eye portion, a shank portion integral with said eye portion, a tongue struck up from said shank portion, the base of the tongue lying at the base of the shank, said tongue and shank extending in the same direction, said shank being adapted to be bent back substantially parallel with the eye portion, and a shoulder projecting from the side of the hanger to limit the inward movement of the hanger.
4. In combination a mounting card having a slot therethrough, a hanger having a shank projecting through said slot and lying against the back surface of said card Copies above the slot, a tongue integral with and struck up from the body of said shank, said tongue lying against the back surface of the card below the slot, and an eye portion above said shank and attached thereto, the base of the tongue lying at the base of the shank, said tongue and shank extending in the same direction.
5. In combination a mounting card having a slot therethrough, a hanger comprising an eye portion and a shank portion integral therewith, shoulders projecting from the side of said hanger and engaging the card to limit movement of the hanger through the slot, and a tongue struck up from the shank portion, said shank projecting through said slot, said main part of the shank being bent upwardly and the tongue being bent downwardly both upon the side of the sheet oppositethe eye portion, the base of the tongue lying at the base of the shank, said tongue and shank extending in the same direction.
In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this20th day of January, A. D.
EZRA KAPLAN.
