FRAIVID PICTURE-OR MIRROR HANGlNG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofY Letters Patent No. 730,055, dated June 2, 1903.
Application led October 1'0, 1902. Serial No.7126,'725. (No model.) Y
.To a/ZZ whom it may ,concern/.f
Be it known that I, EMMET L. SMITH, acidzen of the United States, and a resident of Ghicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi inafterdescribed, and defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. f
Figure l is aside view of a hook engaged with a molding-strip and embodying a feature' oftheimprovements. Fig.2isasiinilarview, but showing a hook of different shape. Fig. 3 is a sectional side view of the hook represented in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the hook indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, representing more clearlya novel detail thereof, comprising a transversely-attened end on the hook. Fig. 5 is a side View of a novel cord attachment for the picture-frame. Fig. 6 is a side view of a cord attachment for a picture-frame, somewhat changed but generically similar to the device shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 6iL is a sectional side View of the device .shown in Fig. G. Fig. 7 is a side view of a modification of the cord attachment. Figs. 8 and 9 are side views of another modification of the cord attachment; and Fig. l0 represents a side wall in section, a molding-strip thereon, and the improvements applied for suspending a picture-frame from the molding-strip.A
In the drawings, 10 indicates a moldingstrip of ordinary formheld in horizontal position on a side wall A and having the usual bead formation 10, projected forwardly at the upper edge of said strip, and the valley or depressed groove lOb in the `upper surface of the molding-stripnear the wall A.
The improvementsembodya novel hook for connecting one end vof a flexible connection, that may be a wire-twisted cord, such as 1l, with the molding-strip 10. Thepbody of the hanger-hook is formed of tubular material, which is bent into form after the insertion through the material forming the hook-body of an end portion of the wire cord 11. The hook may be formed with a curved limb a on yits upper end, that at itsA extremity is {iattened transversely, so that said flattened end a may seat in the groove 10b of the moldingstri p, which will prevent side swaying motion of the cord 11 and of a picture-frame that may be hung therefrom. The hook may also be curved, so as to dispose its lower end close to the surface of the wall A, as shown at l2 in Fig. 2, or when it is desired to hold the .cord 11 away from the wall the body of the hook may be bent, as shown at l2 in Fig. l. When the hook-body is designed to'prevent a close approach of the oord 1l to the wall A, the curvature of lthe hook-nose may with advantage be more open andthe hook-limb be shorter, as shown at 0.2 in Fig. l, and in this construction of the hookan offset bend b may be formed in the body, which will afford a depending straight limb below the' offset, said limb being suitably spaced from the Wall by the gravity of a picture-frame pendent therefrom. 'L Y The cordll is held in the tubular hook by l the bended form of the latter and also b v the Hatvtening of the upper end of thehook-body toproduce the widened nosed" thereon, an additional means for preventing'v the hook `from slipping oft' of the cord llconsi'sting in at a right angle a screw 13, the Screw being at the lower end of the clip-band. In use the lower end of a cord, such as 11, is passed downward through the tubular clip-band 413 and out of the lower end of the passage therethrough, said passage d being turned away from the screw member 133. After insertion of the cord through the lower end d of the passage d the lower and upper edges of said passage may be bent toward the cord by any suitable means, so as to bind thereon, and thus firmly secure Jthe attachment upon the cord. When two cords are employed for the suspension of a heavy picture or mirror frame from the molding-strip 10, these similar cords each have one of the improved hooks secured upon one end and one of the novel screw attachments 13 13n affixed upon the opposite end, and the latter mentioned fixtures are then connected by means of the screws 13 with the side portions of a picture-frame or the like, whereupon the hooks on the cords may be placed upon the molding-strip 10 for suspension of the frame, as is clearly shown, for one hook in Fig. 10.
In Fig. 6 the attachment is similar to that shown in Fig. 5, with the exception that at one side of lthe tubular clip-band 14 a clampingfiange 14n is formed; but a screw 14b is projected laterally from the clip-band for insertion into a frame, as described for the screw 13. In connecting the device shown in Fig. 6 with a picture-frame-supporting cord 11 the lower end of such a cord is inserted downward through the tubular band 14, then out ol thelower end thereof, an end portion thus withdrawn from the lower end of the clipband 14 being bent upward, so as to lie in the concavity of the clamping-flange. After the cnd portion of the cord is located iu the tubular format ion 14 and flange 14 these parts may be clamped upon the cord l1 by a suitable implement, so as to firmly attach them to the cord.
The cord attachment shown in Fig. 7 is essentially the same in construction as that shown in Fig. 5, with the exception that the tubular clip-band 15 is longitudinally slotted, as at e, which permits the clip-band to be clamped upon a wire cord 11 at the ends of said clip-baud and also along the edges of the slots e, which will increase the clamping effeet of the clip-band 15, a screw 15L being projected laterally from the lower end of the slotted clip-band.
S5 In Figs. 8 and 9 the tubular clip-band 1G is similar to the clip-band 13 and may be secured upon an end portion of a wire cord 11, as already described; but instead of a screw a split shank 16 projects at a right angle from the tubular member 16, as represented in Fig. 8, the two parts of said split shank when bent so as to aline with each other, as shown in Fig. 9, affording convenient means for engagement with an ordinary cardboard frame.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A picture-frame hanger, comprising a liexible connection, a hook held on one end of the flexible connection, and a screw having a tubular clip-band disposed at an angle to the screw and receiving the other end of said flexible connection.
2. In a device of the character described, a means for attaching one end ofahanging-cord upon a frame, comprisingatubularclip-band through which the cord at one end is inserted and clamped by compression of the clip-band, and an angularly-projecting member on one end of the tubular clip-band adapted for at tachment to a frame.
3. In a device of the character described, the tubular hook adapted to hold an inserted flexible counecton,by bending the hook member at one end of the tubular material form ing the body of the hook, after insertion of the flexible connection therein and also forming an offset bend in the hook-body between 9o its ends.
4. In a device of the character described, the cord attachment to engage a frame, comprisinga tubular clip-band slotted lengthwise,
open at its lower end, and provided with a 9,'
screw member disposed at right angles to the slotted clip-band. 1
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EMMET L. SMITH. Witnesses:
