WILLIAM L. POEHLMANN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOLDER Foa PLACARDS, SIGNS, sw.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,943, dated January 9, 1900. Application filed May 31, 1899. Serial No. 718,823.` (N0 modell) To @ZZ whom t may concern: ,4 y Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. PoEHL- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Holders for Placards,
Signs, dto., which improvement is fully setl forth in the following companying drawings.
My invention consists of a holder for a placard, sign, rbc., embodying a head, a resilient standard, and means. for clamping said standard to a basket or other receptacle, said parts being constructed as hereinafter described, and the novel features pointed out in the claim. ,y i Figure l represents a perspective View lof a holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A 'designates a head formed of a plate of metal or other suitspeciiication and acable material and having in the front face thereof the parallel grooved bars B, between which are fitted the placards or indicators C of prices and quantities or names and other information, as a sign. Riveted or otherwise secured to said head A, on the back thereof, is the plate D, to which is attached the bearing-piece E, somewhat like a staple, for the eye F of the standard G, by which latter said head is pivotally supported, said standard consisting of the legs H I-I, which are joined by the eye F at the top thereof, so that they are resilient in their nature and adapted to spring apart and flare, as shown in Fig.` 2.
On the legs is the sliding ring J, which is adapted to close the same, as shown in Figs. l and 3, it being noticed that when the ring is moved upwardly the legs ilare at the lower portions and separate, when they may be placed on the wall of a basket or other receptacle so as to straddle the same, after Which the ring is lowered, when the legs are pressed iirmly against said wall, thus tightly clamping the holder to the receptacle.
The lower ends of the legs have inturned shoulders K, so that when the holder is applied to a receptacle, such as a basket, with handle-openings L therein, said shouldersl be inserted aslone into an opening in the" basket limited in descent by the shoulders K, which also serveto support the holder.
It will be seen that the matter on the head A is nicely presented to view, and said head rests against the standard without liability to overturn, as the bearing E for the eye F is above the center of the head; but when the basket is overfull the head may be turned inwardly from below, so as to overhang the contents of the basket and prevent its matter from being obscured or covered, as will be apparent in Fig, 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz l. Aholding-plate provided on itsrear with a bearing-piece, in combination with resilient legs which are united at top by an eye integral therewith and mounted on said piece and provided with an embracing closing-ring, the lower ends of said legs having inturned shoulders and tongues whichdepend from the inner ends of said shoulders.
2. Resilient legs joined at top by an eye, and provided with an embracing closing-ring, in combination with a plate having on its rear, a bearing-piece on which said eye is mounted and on its face with means for holding a placard, dac., the lower portions of said legs being ilarin g and provided with inturned shoulders.
3. Resilient legs joined at top by an eyeand g provided with an embraeing closing-ring, a forming an improvement in holders of the platehaving on its rear, a bearing-piece on character stated.
which said -lefs are mounted by said eye and on its face, prallel grooved bars, the fewer VILLIAM L POEHLMANN' ends of said legs having inturned shoulders Witnesses: and tongues depending from the inner ends WM. C. WIEDERSHEIM, of said shoulders, said parts being combined C. D. MCVAY.
