UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE EASTMAN, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE DIATITE COMPANY.
TRAY FOR DISPLAYING HAND-MIRRORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,120, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed March 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE EASTMAN, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Trays for Holding and Displaying Hand-Mirrors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact deseription, relerenee beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention showing one mirror in place. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, representing the construction of the tray and the method of holding the mirror. Fig. 3 is a cross vertical section, illustrating the construction of the tray.
It is desirable, for the purpose of displaying mirrors and other like articles, to provide means whereby they may be arranged and held in very nearly an upright position; and my device consistsin a tray for thus supportinghandmirrors, and which is also adapted to display a variety or number of different sizes. It embraces the bed or base piece A, having or not, as desired, the legs a, and provided with the series of recesses a, extending across it from end to end, and preferably inclined from the upper surface downwardly toward the front. Into these recesses are fitted the supports or backs B, which preferably are thin pieces of wood of about the width of the recesses, and which are adapted to be placed therein, and which are fastened therein by glue or in any other way, if desired. While it is not essential that they be permanently fastened to the bed, they must be of sufficient height to properly support the mirror or other article.
In order to hold the handle of the mirror on the same horizontal line with the remainder of the mirror-fran1e,it is necessary that a support be provided it, and I have therefore arranged in front of each back B an upwardly-projectmg portion,0, which maybe of wood fastened to the back piece, B, or to the bed A, or which maybe simplya pin projecting outwardly from the supports 13 or upwardly from the bed.
I prefer that the supports B and U be so graduated in size in relation to each other that small mirrors may be supported at the front of the tray, and large mirrors at the rear, and the medium sizes between; but of course this arrangement is immaterial in practicing myinvention.
It will be observed that the mirrors, when in place, occupy the spaces D between two supports,l3, and that the handle rests upon the support (3, and that it is thercbyheld very securely in an upright or more or less inclined position, the supports 13 being of a height sufficient only to hold the mirror in that position and allowing a sullicicnt portion of it to be exposed for display.
It will be observed that, as the height or width of the handle is less than the height or width of the mirror, the support B for the latter portion must be higher than the support for the handle, and I have shown the supports thus shaped.
It will also be observed that the supports are so arranged that the mirrors may be alternated in position in the tray-that is, that the mirror portion of one shall come in front of the handle of the next in order, and this of course will necessitate that the supports 0 be placed in a position to correspond.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure my Letters Patent from the United States-- A tray for holding and displaying hand-mirrors, consisting of the bed A, the upright supports B, fastened to the bed, forming the recesses D, and the handle-supports within the recesses, all substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
GEORGE EASTMAN.
